Chris Jones achieved two silvers and one gold finish at the Croft round of the championship

Using 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-Xâ„¢ motorsport brake pads for the latter half of the 2021 season helped Chris Jones to propel his Ford Fiesta ST150 to an , beating all faster classes in the process.

This year, he’s enjoyed similar successes using the same brake pad setup, with wins at both and over the summer.

Jones most recently headed to the North Yorkshire-based Croft Circuit for the latest round, where a podium finish was waiting for him in all three races of the triple-header held across the weekend.

Jones explains how it all panned out below in his own words.

“We were back out again in the 91´«Ã½ Racing-supported Fiesta ST Challenge car, equipped with RP-Xâ„¢ pads for a triple header at Croft Circuit.

“With testing on the Friday going well and going over 1.2 seconds quicker than last year, I was looking forward to qualifying and the races.

“With times swapping between myself and the eventual pole sitter, I finished qualifying in 2nd, but still on the front row.”

“During Race 1, a good start got me in the lead but running side-by-side through the chicane I dropped to second and a safety car disrupted the race, meaning I finished 2nd.

“Race 2 was much better; with another brilliant start, I got my head down and tried to make a break from the pack. Holding the lead for the entire race and taking another 1st place for the year.

“Race 3 was 20 minutes long and was epic – going side-by-side off the start, the race-long battle ended with me in a close 2nd place but with the fastest lap and a large gap to 3rd place while still racing hard. The RP-X™ pads were still as good as ever.

“The brakes are still performing brilliantly as they have all year. We go into the final round in a few weeks’ time, so watch this space…â€

EP3 Civic Type R driver tried out 91´«Ã½ Racing’s friction material in Snetterton leg of the race series

A few weeks ago, Type R Trophy racer, Luke Rosewell, tested 91´«Ã½ Racing’s high-performance RP-1 brake pads in his EP3 Honda Civic Type R during the Croft Circuit round of the series.

The weekend was meant to be a chance to try out the firm’s equally-as-competent RP-X pads, too, but some misfortune in the form of a blown engine unfortunately put an end to that plan.

The next leg of the championship took Luke to Snetterton, where this time luck was on his side, meaning both variants of the ‘RP’ pads could be given a try back-to-back across the weekend in his hot hatch.

Luke’s thoughts on the weekend and how the brake pads fared can be viewed below in his own words.

“I finally got to try the RP-X pads at the weekend in the Civic and I’ve only got one word to describe them… WOW!

“I started the Friday test day on the RP-1s from the last round, but with some extra cooling, and we were instantly on the pace. There was also absolutely no fade after 20-25 minutes of running, so the cooling helped hugely for the pads.

“Towards the end of the day, I was to bed in the RP-X front pads ready for qualifying on Saturday morning. After following the bedding-in instructions for a couple of laps, we left them to cool for five minutes before trying to push. Wow; the stopping power of the RP-X was unbelievable – I was able to effortlessly brake 10 metres later at all the big braking zones. I was in P2 at the end of the day and we were certainly not being out-braked by anyone with this setup!

“Qualifying went well as we secured P3, albeit with some struggles to get the car’s balance right with the high track temperatures. The brakes were fantastic and the car was so stable under heavy braking for the whole 15-minute session.â€

“In Race 1, we lost a place off the line, but we had such an advantage under brakes, we pressured the P3 driver into a mistake trying to brake later into a corner than they could. By this time, 2nd was out of reach so we settled for 3rd.

“In Race 2, we held P3 off the line and went with the front two drivers. Unfortunately, the safety car came out halfway around the first lap so we didn’t have a chance to make a move. Under the safety car, we lost ABS due to a failed sensor. This meant we had a large rear brake bias which made the car quite on edge.

“After the restart, we went with the leaders but a slight rear lock up into a hairpin dropped us back a couple of car lengths. With only two laps after the safety car, there wasn’t enough time to make any of the gap back.

“Overall, I would say the RP-X pad had a better initial bite than the RP-1, but we have yet to see how the life of them stands up in comparison. The weekend was very hot (over 30°C), yet we had no pad fade whatsoever, even following cars closely.

“With no ABS in Race 2, I was expecting the brakes to be a bit too grabby for a standard system, but quite the opposite! You could stand on the brakes and the car was very stable, up until the point you started trailing into the corner and the rear would just snatch slightly. I felt as though we were never lacking on brakes throughout the weekend, compared to the others around us, all the 91´«Ã½ products I have tried so far have been a huge step forward in performance!

“I’ll certainly be getting another set of RP-X to use at the next round at Silverstone!â€

Civic Type R driver enjoyed the 91´«Ã½ Racing formula in both two Croft races of the championship

In the second round of the 2021 Type R Trophy recently, held at Darlington’s Croft Circuit, racer Luke Rosewell was able to use the two-race weekend to try out 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-1 track/race brake pad in his EP3 Honda Civic Type R.

Although it wasn’t the most straightforward weekend for Rosewell, with plenty of hurdles thrown into the mix, he was very impressed with the friction material and managed to secure a podium finish in the second race.

Luke’s thoughts on the weekend and how the brake pads fared can be viewed below in his own words.

“What a drama round two of the Type R Trophy turned out to be for me!

“I planned to run my current pads [a popular pad in the Civic race scene, from another high-performance brake manufacturer] in FP1, EBC’s RP-1 in FP2, EBC’s RP-X in FP3 and then whichever set was best in FP4.

“All was going well, apart from a few red flags cutting track time and the RP-1 pads bedded in nicely. I was then a couple of laps into my push run and I missed fourth gear, tried again but got second… and that was the end of the engine (and my day)!

“After scouring eBay all afternoon, we found an engine in Birmingham, with the guy willing to deliver to Croft the same day. By 6pm on Friday night, the eBay motor was shoehorned into his brother’s car’s passenger footwell!â€

“In the meantime, me and Dad were removing the blown engine from a car we had never worked on before.

“The new engine landed in Croft at 9:30pm (quicker than Amazon Prime!) and we set about swapping over the regulation bits and other parts (plugs, coils, alternator etc – all things that we didn’t know the history of on the new engine).

“By 11:30pm, the light had beaten us, but at least we had mounted the engine in place.

At 5:30am on Saturday morning, we started again, four hours before qualifying was due to start. We had some great help from the lads at DH Racing (who built the car originally), without this, we definitely wouldn’t have got as far as we did.

“By 7:45am, we had the new engine running for the first time and thankfully without any knocking or funny noises. After clearing all the excess oil and water out of the exhaust, we finished building the front end up and had the car on its wheels at 8:45am ready for scrutineering.â€

“Qualifying came and with less than 10 laps of testing (on a track we had never driven before), we managed to bring it back in P4. The RP-1 pads performed brilliantly throughout, with no intrusion of ABS and no long pedal at all. The car still wasn’t handling how I would have liked and I was still deciding gears and lines for corners.

“Race 1 was a bit messy at the start and I ended the first lap in P5. Without the pace to go with the front three, I stuck to the bumper of fourth and after 10 minutes of pressure, we managed to force him into a mistake which gave me the chance to get through. We finished a comfortable P4. I now had a much better idea of where I was going, with another chance to make set up changes to the car.

“In Race 2, the car was much better, I was in P3 after the first lap, pressuring P2 into a couple of small errors (but not enough to get through). After about 12 minutes, I made a mistake on a gear change out the hairpin (same place as Friday), but this time I made sure I selected the correct gear, losing a second in the process. With the pressure off P2, I was settling for third when I got caught with a slow back-marker through a yellow flag zone, almost dropping me back into the hands of P4. Thankfully, we held onto P3 to finish the weekend.

“Overall, the RP-1 pads were a huge step in performance compared to the previous pads I used. The bite was fantastic and they never went into the ABS like the other pads did, meaning you could brake deep into a corner, knowing the car was going to stop. I would say that the only downside I found with them was that in the last lap or two of races, the pedal went a little long, but after following cars for the majority of the time, I put this down to the cooling.

“I ran the Bluestuff rear pads all weekend and they definitely had a great initial bite. When running with my previous pads, the car felt too much rear biased, but with the RP-1 fronts, the balance settled much better.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to bed in the RP-X pads before qualifying, due to the engine blow up, so I wasn’t able to try these. At our next race in Snetterton, I will be back-to-back testing RP-1 and RP-X during the testing sessions and can hopefully provide more feedback on the pads.

“If the RP-1’s are anything to go by, I can’t wait to try the RP-X!â€
