We show you the 91传媒 components that perfectly match your lifestyle

Welcome to EBC鈥檚 鈥楽uit Your Style鈥 blog series, where we match you up with the 91传媒 upgrades that complement particular driving requirements, ensuring you get the ideal components for your vehicle.

In today鈥檚 blog, we鈥檙e hitting the circuit to look at braking components for dedicated track/race cars 鈥 the most demanding form of driving where it鈥檚 more vital than ever to rely on strong and enduring stopping power.

Around a decade ago, 91传媒 launched its high performance/motorsport sub-division, 91传媒 Racing 鈥 a firm that has become synonymous with range-topping braking at race tracks around the globe.

From road-legal track upgrades to endurance race components, there鈥檚 something for every corner of the motorsport spectrum in the 91传媒 Racing range, as we will explore below鈥

Bluestuff

A great all-round sport and race pad 鈥 just as comfortable on track as it is performing daily driving duties. Road legal in most territories, making it incredibly versatile.

Bluestuff material exhibits a 0.52渭 stable friction once bedded, stable up to a slightly higher 550鈩/1000鈩 than its sister compound Yellowstuff but with the benefit of a 30% longer lifespan.

Bluestuff has been a track day favourite for years and is the spec pad for the BMW 318i Cup series throughout Europe. New formula is copper free to conform to upcoming environmental legislations.

RP-1鈩/RP-X鈩 Motorsport Brake Pads

Designed for vehicles driven hard on track, RP-1鈩 possesses a moderately high friction level of 0.45 between 100 鈥 750掳C (200 鈥 1400掳F). The more progressive response characteristic of RP-1鈩 makes it well suited for inherently 鈥榦ver-servoed鈥 vehicles where a softer pad material is desirable to allow greater finesse when on the brakes.

RP-X鈩 possesses a high friction level of 0.55 between 0 鈥 750掳C (Ambient 鈥 1400掳F) and achieves a 100% brake effect from cold 鈥 an excellent choice for sprint racing or hill climb events, where full brake performance is essential without requiring any 鈥榳arming up鈥, but also makes RP-X鈩 well suited to any type of circuit use where a high initial bite and powerful brake response is desirable.

Both RP-series brake pad options are a fantastic choice for track day regulars or out-and-out racers.

Please note: EBC鈥檚 RP-series of brake pads are not designed for the road, but may be used in street conditions where local laws permit.

SR-11鈩/ SR-21鈩 Sintered Endurance Brake Pads

Whilst the competition struggles to make organic and semi-metallic pads last longer and longer to reach the pinnacle of brake pad durability, EBC has taken a fresh new approach with a blend of compressed and heat fused (sintered) metal powdered alloys, to deliver a brake pad that brakes better and lasts longer than just about everything.

The new SR series comes in two blends, SR-11鈩 the medium friction version and SR-21鈩 the higher friction options

Although badged an endurance-grade material, these pads are equally at home in any form of closed-circuit racing, short or long duration.

Please note: EBC鈥檚 SR-series of brake pads are not designed for the road, but may be used in street conditions where local laws permit.

Fully Floating Two-Piece Brake Rotors

Craftsmanship meets fine materials in EBC鈥檚 highest performing rotor to date. Not simply a 鈥榖olt-up鈥 two-piece unit like many of EBC鈥檚 competitors offer, they are genuine fully floating units with flat-sided SD square drive buttons, allowing expansion and contraction under the harsh conditions of heavy braking.

Featuring a a black, heat-resistant finish that quickly wears down to the natural iron finish on the disc ring within the first few miles. Any unswept areas remain protected by the black coating, such as the outer edges and inside the pad track, unless burned off due to hard use and high temperatures.

Another major benefit of the 91传媒 fine slotted discs is their ability to totally resist cracking common with ‘through-drilled’ discs.

Apollo-Series Brake Calipers

UK designed and made strong-yet-lightweight aluminium four- and six-piston brake calipers, which can be purchased within a Big Brake Kit or as separate components for vehicle builders to convert cars where a dedicated Big Brake Kit is not yet made by EBC.

Packed with cutting-edge tech such as high-temperature fluid seals coupled with full boot type dust seals, lightweight hard-anodised aluminium pistons, staggered piston sizes and fully stainless-steel fittings.

BF307+ Super DOT 4 Brake Fluid

EBC鈥檚 BF307+ high performance Super DOT 4 brake fluid has been specially formulated to provide outstanding performance for braking systems routinely operated at extreme temperatures, making this fluid ideal for fast street use, track days and racing.

]]>

This article explores the phenomenon of pad tapering and what causes this on a multi-piston brake caliper

Unfortunately, you will always see some degree of pad tapering. It is common to see a few millimetres of taper, and this is totally normal. Furthermore, in track-based driving situations, you may see slightly more tapered wear. Pad tapering is completely inescapable, but there are things that can be done to limit it.

Pad tapering on multi-piston calipers can be caused by many issues, including but not limited to:

  • Incorrect caliper installation
  • Seized pistons
  • Uneven differential in pressure between the leading and trailing edge of the caliper

How are EBC calipers different and what do they do to eliminate excessive pad taper?

Staggered Pistons

Multi-piston brake calipers in the past frequently utilised the same-sized pistons in both leading and trailing positions, especially in 4-piston calipers. Multi-sized (staggered) pistons tended to only be implemented into 6-piston calipers (and above).

With calipers that are fitted with the same-sized leading and trailing pistons, you often will notice pad tapering, and this is further amplified when the vehicle is used for track days due to the pressure distribution between the leading and trailing edge of the caliper.

On all EBC Apollo series calipers, staggered pistons are incorporated which allow us to fine-tune the differential of pressure between the leading and trailing edge of the caliper. When a smaller diameter piston is used on the leading edge (the side where the rotating disc/rotor passes first), this ensures that the brake force is evenly distributed across the pad and thus combats pad tapering.

An example of this is our Apollo-4 (100 series) brake caliper, where the leading pistons are 38.1mm in diameter and the trailing piston sizes are 41.2mm in diameter 鈥 allowing us to shift the distribution of pressure more evenly. The reasoning behind the use of smaller-sized pistons at the leading edge and larger sized pistons at the trailing edge is that less pressure is applied to the smaller pistons (leading) and 聽more pressure can be delivered by the larger pistons (trailing), forcing the pistons to clamp the pad and thus the disc/rotor in such a way that will even out taper wear on the pads.

Unfortunately, it is near impossible to completely eradicate taper wear completely.

Sticking/Seized Pistons 鈥 How do We Combat This?

All EBC Apollo brake caliper bodies are initially hard-anodised for excellent corrosion resistance and extended caliper longevity. We then fit our lightweight hard-anodised aluminium pistons with serrated piston noses that reduce heat transfer into the braking hydraulics and finally top this off with high-temperature fluid seals coupled with full boot-type dust seals, to give maximum protection against road grime and debris 鈥 all of this leads to a system that is well protected from the issue of seized pistons. However, it is key that on any braking system, preventative maintenance is always carried out, especially if the system is being used in a harsh environment or on track days and such like.

Leading vs Trailing Calipers (Caliper Handing and the Correct Fitment)

When fitting new Apollo series calipers, always check the hand of the caliper by observing the casting number machined into the piston face. Whether the caliper is right/left handed will be denoted at the end of the casting number, for example 鈥4101R/6101R鈥. (The left/right hand side of the vehicle is referenced to the driver sitting in the driver鈥檚 seat). The disc/rotor must also always pass the smaller diameter (leading) piston first.

The caliper orientation must always be such that the bleed nipples point up with the fluid cross-over pipe at the bottom. Calipers not installed close to the vertical may present a problem during bleeding.

EBC Apollo 4- and 6-Pot Calipers 鈥 Key Features

  • High-temperature fluid seals coupled with full boot-type dust seals to give maximum protection against road grime and debris
  • Lightweight hard-anodised aluminium pistons with serrated piston noses that reduce heat transfer into the braking hydraulics
  • Staggered piston sizes to eliminate pad taper
  • FEA-optimised geometry ensuring maximum body stiffness for minimum caliper weight
  • Hard-anodised caliper body for excellent corrosion resistance and extended caliper longevity
  • Every single brake caliper is pressure tested to 2500psi
  • Full stainless-steel hardware and fittings, providing durability and longevity
  • Uses standard pad shapes, giving choice when selecting brake pads

EBC Apollo series brake calipers are cast in UK, machined in the UK, painted in the UK and then assembled in the UK 鈥 reinforcing the EBC philosophy of providing quality British-made braking products yet at affordable prices.

With so many calipers in this segment of the market being bought in from Far East, surely this is the ultimate testament to EBC鈥檚 devotion to quality. EBC are and will always be a true champion of Great British engineering.

Non-EBC Caliper Pad Taper

If you are not planning to change calipers to something with better engineering, you may get some benefits by using a pad with a one-ended chamfer on the friction material, which essentially moves the centre of effort and can help reduce or prevent taper.

91传媒 has introduced this for various applications to combat pad taper. For more information, please email raceinfo@ebcbrakes.com.

An 91传媒 Racing Apollo Balanced Big Brake kit for these popular hot hatches will be available soon

At 91传媒鈥 Northampton-based R&D centre, the 鈥91传媒 Racing鈥 arm of the company is always busy developing new products to add to its acclaimed range of motorsport-derived braking components.

Currently undergoing final testing and soon to be available is an Apollo Balanced Big Brake Kit for the Mk6 (2004-2008) Ford Fiesta ST150.

The owner of one of the development vehicles used to fine-tune this product tells us of his experiences with the big brake kit since it was installed on his vehicle a few months ago. You can read his thoughts on the kit in his own words below.

鈥淚 purchased my ST150 in April 2021 as an investment due to how the car industry is moving towards electric power. I have always wanted a low-mileage ST150, so jumped at the opportunity when I could. The car was purchased to be enjoyed for shows and on some track days, as it is only used for pleasure.

鈥淎s soon as the EBC BBK [big brake kit] was installed, you could feel the difference. Within two weeks of having the kit I had to use the full stoping power it delivers to stop me making a four-car pileup into five-car pileup. I have never felt a car stop so quick and well in my life until that moment. Not long becoming a dad, the BBK has filled with me so much confidence as I know even on the road it delivers.

鈥淚鈥檝e now bedded in the brakes and the response you get is spot on. I am yet to take it out on track which will happen this year and I look forward to the stopping power it delivers. It definitely ticks all boxes for performance and it鈥檚 great that EBC have developed this kit as there is not much in the market for the ST150. So having a big name like EBC puts confidence in the driver as, at the end of the day, brakes are a safety component.

鈥淚 test drove a Fiesta ST150 with a Focus ST170 brake setup installed, and where they were better than stock, the EBC BBK out-performed in comparison to both setups. As the car was purchased for shows and track, the kit benefits me in both ways: on track it鈥檚 good for performance and stopping power, while at shows as it鈥檚 a great conversation starter.

鈥淚 look forward to showing the BBK at shows and I look forward to see what it can do on track.鈥

    A) Every two years for normal road use, or every 2-3 visits to the race track for a vehicle used frequently on the circuit.
  • Q) How do I choose the right type of brake fluid?A) Most vehicles use Glycol DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid 鈥 see the top of your master cylinder or owner鈥檚 manual for more info.
  • Q) What鈥檚 the difference between DOT 3/4/5 brake fluids?
    A) DOT 3 and 4 are effectively the same, with DOT 4 being purer. DOT 5 can be silicone or glycol variants and cannot be interchanged with DOT 3/4.
  • Q) What type of brake fluid is used for racing?A) A DOT 4 high-temperature version is best, such as .
  • Q) What is 鈥榙ry boiling point鈥 and 鈥榳et boiling point鈥?A) The dry boiling point refers to when fluid is new from an unopened bottle. The wet boiling point is when the fluid is used and needs changing (where the water content is past 3%).
  • Q) Why is dry boiling point higher than wet boiling point?A) This is because the moisture content of a brake fluid boils at a lower temperature, therefore the wet boiling point will be lower.
  • Q) What are brake caliper seals made of?A) Most vehicles use EPDM rubber, while a few use Nitrile rubber. A third, rarer version is Viton.
  • Q) How often should brake caliper seals be changed?A) Every 2-3 years in road use, or every few races on the track, or if the caliper body reaches temperatures over 250掳C.
  • Q) What is the maximum safe temperature for caliper seals to be exposed to?A) EPDM seals (the most popular type) are not designed for use above 140-150掳C, which corresponds to a caliper body temperature of about 250掳C.
  • Q) How hot do my discs/rotors get and what does this mean for my pad compound selection?A) Heat paints are a handy tool in telling you exactly what products you should be using.

91传媒 offers three heat paints which can be brushed onto the outer edge of the rotor before racing, to detect temperatures. The 91传媒 rotor paint kit also includes 10 caliper heat strips.

The rotor paints supplied are:

#1 鈥 800掳F/430掳C

#2 鈥 1000掳F/540掳C

#3 鈥 1200掳F/650掳C

Paint all three separately in lines on your disc/rotor edge.

The temperature at the centre of the brake pad will always be on average 100掳C/200掳F more than the outer edge of the rotor in race use. If your rotor edge is not setting off the 430掳C paint line, all EBC compounds will be fine.

If the 430掳C paint line activates (530掳C at the centre of the pad), you鈥檙e at the limits of聽.

If the disc/rotor outer edge temperatures exceed 540掳C (640掳C approx. at the pad centre), you are past the limits of EBC鈥檚 Bluestuff and need to switch to聽.

If the 650掳C paint line goes off (750掳C at the pad centre), you鈥檙e definitely in need of either the RP range or SR series of pads.

Here is a guide on 91传媒 compounds and their temperature ranges:

(The curves below show that on average in race use, the pad temperature runs at approx. 100掳C above the disc/rotor outer edge:)

This article explores the fact that bigger tyres can affect braking distances

This is well-documented physics and a few links below underline that.

At 91传媒, we are very aware that altering rim size and tyre size that results in a larger 鈥淭yre rolling radius鈥 seriously affects braking power.聽In short, the relationship between tyre rolling radius and brake rotor size is critical.

Trucks are designed for standard operating conditions and going to oversize tyres changes everything.

Sure, the wheels rotate slightly slower but the 鈥渢orque arm鈥 created by the oversize tyres can be between 20 and 30% more, meaning, you have to either press the brake pedal that much harder or;

  1. Fit higher friction pads
  2. Go for heavy-duty calipers with less flex
  3. Even fit an oversize brake rotor kit.

Item 2 and 3 will cost between $500 and $2000 whereas a set of great pads such as the new EBC ED+ extra Duty pads come in below $200 for every truck out there and takes only minutes to safely install.

EBC has tested its new ED pads over a 200 stops test at a blistering 400C ( 750F ) which is about as hot as truck brakes can get and the brake effect (friction level) doesn鈥檛 move!

This article by the LA Times is worth a read;

Toyota Forum states this from a survey;

This gives EBC a big thumbs up even before ED+ came around. Here’s a link to read more about the new ED+ truck Jeep and SUV pads
