Sam Preston takes his EP3 Honda Civic Type R on various track days throughout each year

Following multiple successful track days around the UK with his Apollo big brake kit-adorned Civic Type R, we recently caught up with Sam Preston once again following a mammoth trip to the Nürburgring and Spa in his heavily modified vehicle.

Sam was previously running Yellowstuff pads on his four-piston setup, as the car was still being used on the road occasionally, but he’s now enhanced his Honda further so it’s predominantly a track day machine.

Because of this, he swapped out to 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-Xâ„¢ track/motorsport brake pads once he arrived at each of these European track days – noting how the improved bite helped match the other recent upgrades he’s performed to his car.

You can read how it panned out in his own words below…

“I’ve just returned from back-to-back track days on the Nürburgring Nordschleife and Spa-Francorchamps.

“With the car now running the likes of an LSD, semi-slick tyres, a full Milltek exhaust system and some other breathing mods, the upgrade to RP-Xâ„¢ pads on my Apollo big brake kit has proven to be very impressive – especially as both circuits remained mainly dry each day!”

“I didn’t think the big brake kit could get any better when I was running Yellowstuff pads, but the RP-X™ pads are on another level. The braking performance is predictable and completely consistent, event after multiple laps of the Nordschleife back-to-back.

“Having confidence in the brakes really is one of the most important factors of getting the most out of a track day, and something people often overlook. Thankfully it’s not something I ever have to think about now with this setup.â€

Daniel Livingstone races in the Caterham Graduates Sigmax Championship

Caterham racer, Daniel Livingstone, is currently racing in the Sigmax class of the Caterham Graduates race series.

This class hosts Caterhams up to 140bhp, with various modifications allowed, meaning Livingstone has opted for 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-Xâ„¢ track/race brake pad.

The series recently headed to Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit – arguably one of the finest race circuits in the world – where Livingstone clinched some great results despite some potential setbacks.

You can read his story below in his own words.

“Round 3 of the Caterham Graduates Sigmax Championship was at the famous Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. It was my first race outside of the UK, being only my 9th ever race weekend. I am still relatively new to the UK circuits, let alone European ones.

“Using EBC pads gives me confidence on the brakes when I arrive at the first corner out of the pits on any circuit and this really gives me confidence when attacking a new circuit.

“I am running EBC’s RP-X™ pads in my Caterham and the stopping power is brilliant, braking has always been a strong point for me and using these pads has made my braking more consistent.

“Qualifying was mixed unfortunately, with a front wing coming loose, so this required an unplanned pit stop to remove. Time was quickly up and I couldn’t show the pace I had.”

“Race 1 was brilliant in comparison; I had a great start and was able to finish P2. Some nice moves late on the brakes! Race 2 started well but a clutch failure left me only able to drive in 4th gear! I didn’t give up and managed to finish P3.

“Overall, it was an amazing weekend, a real pinch myself moment to be racing at arguably the best race circuit in the world. Entering Eau Rouge at 120mph in a Caterham is out of this world! Having confidence in your braking equipment as you’ve travelled down the Kemmel straight and entered the heavy braking zone at Les Combes is a priority as it really enables you to make the right overtakes at the right time.

“As always, I would like to thank 91´«Ã½ for supporting me. Motorsport is expensive and to have the support of EBC has been a dream come true.â€

Dean Clarke tried the 91´«Ã½ Racing product at both Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with very positive results

British-based Dean Clarke enjoys regular track days in his Toyota GR Yaris. Keen to upgrade from the factory brake pads and improve his braking performance when out on the circuit, he recently tried 91´«Ã½ Racing’s track/motorsport RP-1â„¢ friction material during a trip around two of the most demanding circuits in Europe.

Dean’s thoughts on how RP-1™ fared in his hot hatch – initially shared to the , can be read below in his own words.

“I’m back. What a trip! I’ve done just over 1000 miles on the 91´«Ã½ Racing RP-1â„¢ pads, including an afternoon session at Spa and two days at the Nürburgring.

“First off, I was really impressed with the quality. They have very serious stainless steel backing plates with no visible fixings in the pad material. They come it 14.5mm thick against the OEM ones at 14.7mm. The backing plate is about 0.6mm thicker so you end up with about 1mm less pad material (EBC has since advised all new production of the GR pads is being built on slightly thinner 5.2mm stainless steel to allow increased pad material and therefore longer pad wear life). The shape is spot-on for the caliper and OEM shim.â€

“You will notice they don’t have chamfered edges. This gives you more pad area but will make the brakes noisier. They also have little ‘ears’ on the bases which make seeing how much pad you have left a breeze – such a great idea.”

“Bedding-in was easy – three medium stops to a crawl, then three hard stops to a crawl – they felt consistent through it all.

“I gave them a good test the next morning and was really pleased with how they performed. They have really great modulation like the OEM pads, but with more outright stopping power without being overbearing like a full race pad. Just what I wanted.

“This is where I discovered a benefit to some – they are not very dusty at all. Below are my 100-mile white wheels. This level of dust would usually be there in 10 miles using competitor materials.”

“Ok, fast-forward to Belgium and their first real test. Spa has three really big stops pretty close, so it was all eyes on fade and temps. They performed faultlessly, the modulation is much better and you can really lean on the pedal if you need to and get much better braking than is possible on the standard pads. My temp stickers maxed out at 166°, which is over 50° less than other pads.â€

“Over to Germany and the Nordschleife… This is where they really come good. It’s a big track to remember and sometimes you mess things up a bit, so having the ability to have good, consistent braking is a big plus. I got nine laps in before a puncture. When getting new tyres, I had a peek of the wear – hardly touched (see what I mean about the little wing ears?).â€

“German quality – they even cleaned my wheels!”

“Day two was drama-free and I cracked out 12 laps.

“I got home, whipped the wheels off and had a peek at the pads. They have worn about 2.5mm of 8mm. OEM pads would never have done all three days.

“All in, I’m very impressed – RP-1â„¢ is my new go-to pad actually.â€

Marko Baller tested the 91´«Ã½ Racing motorsport friction material at the demanding Belgian circuit

In the autumn of 2021, track day regular Marko Baller took his trusty Lotus Elise S1 to Belgium’s much-loved Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for another full day’s track action.

Keen to try the new line of 91´«Ã½ Racing motorsport friction materials, he installed a set of RP-X pads on all four corners of his roadster before the day began.

Following a successful day out on the intense 4.3-mile circuit, Marko gave us his thoughts on the product, which can be viewed below.

“I was at Spa recently with the 91´«Ã½ Racing RP-X brake pads installed. The car uses standard Lotus calipers with 290mm front discs and 282mm grooved 91´«Ã½ rear discs.

“What can I say? They brake consistently and hard! Brake feel was very proportional to foot pressure, with no increase or decrease in friction while braking. This made it very easy to control. Want more? Press harder. Want less? press less.

“Friction coefficient was high, but not excessive. In the non-servo assisted Lotus Elise, they were easy to use even while blipping the throttle the same time.

“Cold friction was pretty much the same as hot – as expected from a pad of this calibre. They squeal a little when cold, but when hot on track they were silent with a remote mechanical noise transmitted into the pedal from the slotted brake discs – all good and normal.

“I asked a friend who is a very experienced and fast driver to drive my car, first alone and then with me as a passenger. This was properly scary! He is a long-term user of a rival brake pad, but liked RP-X (and the rest of the car) very much.â€
