Famous chopper run from California to San Felipe, Mexico is a highlight on many motorcyclists’ calendars

The El Diablo Run was conceived in 2006 by two long-time friends and businessmen from Temecula, California. Their mission was to ride their hand-built choppers from California down to Mexico. They cooked up a plan to ride the distance with like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts.

Since then, the event has become a staple for any self-respecting chopper fans, not least the EBC-equipped Zen Pro Racing team who once again competed in the rally for 2021.

The team’s experiences of the event can be read below in front man Mo Martinez’s words.

We began a custom bobber build back in May 2020, but soon afterwards I was hospitalised for two months, with ongoing adverse health conditions after this time, so the project went on hold for nine months.

Shortly after recovering and knowing the El Diablo Run was approaching, Zen Pro Racing resumed the build and completed it in time.

With just 47 riders taking part in the initial run back in 2006, over 2000 bikers from across the globe joined us for the journey this year back in April.

The event includes yard games with the ‘Circle of Death’ being the highlighted race towards the end of the day across the Sonoran Desert-type terrain. The two classes are Swingarm and the Rigid (no suspension). Zen Pro Racing opted to race the rigid class with our newly built, EBC-equipped custom bobber.

Zen Pro Racing and its team support members disembarked from their headquarters with a four-hour journey across the desert. Upon arrival and settling in, they prepped accordingly for the next day’s race event.

RACE DAY – The Swingarm class went first, followed by the Rigid class. Number 15 was assigned by request in commemoration of a fallen team member who lost his life racing the Baja 500 in June of 2013.

START LINE – With the green flag dropping, Zen Pro Racing lead the pack with a huge lead between the second rider, for approximately a half lap until the fuel valve was hit by their racer’s leg ripping the fuel line clean off the carburettor thus, calling marking the end as other riders by-passed the now inoperable race bike. But that’s racing for you!

Successful EBC-equipped Army racer will compete in a number of championships throughout 2021

Sergeant Richard Spencer-Fleet is a Vehicle Mechanic with the Army’s Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Also an avid motorcycle racer, he’s been a significant player in the EBC-supported Army Motorcycle Road Race Team for a number of years.
Once again supported by 91´«Ã½ for 2021, Spencer-Fleet gives us his impressive back-story, as well as his thoughts for the 2021 season, below.

My name is Sergeant Richard Spencer-Fleet, an ARMY Vehicle Mechanic in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. After starting to ride motorcycles from a very young age, it was in my blood to one day race.

In 2014, I was lucky enough to be selected to race for the Army Motorcycle Road Race Team. In that rookie year, we won the Rookie 600 and Clubman 600 Endurance championships and achieved a string of individual podiums. The podiums and results continued in 2015, leading to the National 600 Endurance championship.

After years of Endurance at National level and a massive accident in 2017 – that saw me being helicoptered from Brands with broken back and neck, I needed a focus to get me up and about and get fixed. The Ducati TriOptions Cup in the British Superbike Championship (BSB) was the only way. The jump was made into a support class in 2018 – we knew it would be tough after a year of recovery, but we were up to the challenge.

The 2020 season was my third competitive year in the Ducati TriOptions Cup and onboard one of the latest Ducati Panigale V2s. 2020 was a very tough season, with minimal on-bike training due to Covid-19. Staying physically and mentally fit for the season start was the only thing I could do until restrictions lifted.

The aim for the season was for more top-10 results, as per previous years. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and I just missed out on the positions. Building confidence throughout saw personal best times set at every circuit, dropping a massive 2.8 seconds a lap in the final round at Brands Hatch GP. Other positives to take from the season were finishing higher in the championship than in previous years and successfully gaining more points.

Taking the positives, confidence and lesson learned forward into the 2021 season, it’s shaping up to be a great year. Not only will I be racing in the Ducati TriOptions Cup, but I will also be racing at the Thundersport GB in the Interservice Military Championship.

I would like to thank 91´«Ã½ for all the support that I and the Army Motorcycle Road Race Team have received; the discs and GPFAX pads have categorically improved our overall performance and potential in those critical braking zones. It is the culmination of these marginal gains that has confidently prepared us for this season. Thank you.

Trio of Suzuki GSX-R 1000 racers will compete with 91´«Ã½ products throughout the 2021 season

Buckinghamshire-based MSG Racing has been an established name in the motorcycle racing paddock for almost two decades, covering various large national series with some very well-known riders over the years.

Campaigning mainly in the Thundersport GB championship for 2021, the outfit will once again use 91´«Ã½â€™ high-performance discs and pads on its trio of race-prepped Suzuki GSX-R 1000 machines, ridden by Chris Curtis, Sam Osborne and Will Harper.

The team give us a brief history of their successes in their own words below.

MSG Racing formed as a race team in 2002, alongside Gavin Reed’s then-small motorcycle repair business, working from home since 1999.

From national club racing to British Superbikes as well as racing in Spain, Gavin set out to help chosen riders on the way to achieve their racing dream, leading to over 50 club championships and some of the lads moving on to British Superbikes and the Isle of Man TT.

Today’s riders are all established MSG-supported riders and have been working with the team for several seasons now. All three are racing the latest model Suzuki GSX-R 1000 machines prepared and maintained by MSG Racing. For 2021, we have Chris Curtis, Sam Osborne and Will Harper in the 1000cc GP1 class with Thundersport GB. We are all looking forward to the season ahead and working with EBC and their great braking products.

Full team members are Will Harper, Chris Curtis, Sam Osborne, John ‘Snowy’ Chapman and Gavin Reed, along with much appreciated support from others both on and off track.

Back at the workshop, race prep and dyno tuning is carried out by Gavin and Daniel Diamond (also a racer himself when possible).

None of what we do would be possible without the help of some amazing working partners. Bring on the 2021 race season and let’s add to the championship tally…

ÌýFour impressive EBC-equipped riders make up this formidable motorcycle racing outfit

Market Harborough-based SymCirrus Motorsport supports a number of talented motorcycle racers in a range of UK-based series. All of the firm’s riders use 91´«Ã½ braking products on their motorcycles when competing.
The outfit has recently unveiled its 2021 rider line-up, with four big names on its books for another competitive season. More details about each rider can be found below in their own words.

Elliot Pinson, Ducati Panigale V2

Ducati TriOptions Cup

My name is Elliot Pinson. I’m currently riding in the Ducati TriOptions Cup onboard the Ducati V2 Panigale and 2021 will be my second year doing so.

I started off racing minimotos in the FAB-Racing Championship and then progressed on to a Mini GP70 where I won the championship in 2015. I then moved on to the Team Green Junior Cup, riding a Ninja 300 in the Bemsee paddock in 2016 and managed to win that as well.

2017 was a big bump in the road for me, it was my first year riding a standard Moto 3 machine at BSB which I was struggling to get to grips with and then at the third round at Oulton Park, I was involved in a start line incident which left me with a broken left leg and ended my season early.

I recovered and came back to racing in 2018, where I competed in the Junior SSP class at BSB and finished third overall after missing the first round. I returned to the Junior SSP class in 2019 alongside riding in the British Talent Cup (BTC). I missed the first few rounds of Junior SSP due to my BTC commitments but after I showed strong form at my first race that year, we decided to leave the BTC and focus efforts on the Junior SSP which saw me ending up being crowned champion, with 11 wins from 14 races and missing two rounds.

In 2020, I made a big step up to race the Ducati V2 Panigale from the Ninja 400, I made good progress throughout the season as I learned how to ride the powerful bike and by the end of the season I was running at the front, taking six podiums including two second places. So, that’s my story so far and in the future I hope to continue with my journey and progress onto greater things.

EBC have supported me since 2016. The GPFAX brake pads and discs have helped me win two championships and win a number of races.

Edmund Best, Ducati Panigale V2

Ducati TriOptions Cup

My Name is Edmund Best and this year I will be competing in Ducati TriOptions for the second year on board a Ducati V2.

I first started riding when I was three, with my inspiration to ride being my late Grampy Ron whose love of motorbikes helped spark mine at an early age. I have been racing motorcycles since I was six years old and am a former six-times British Grasstrack Champion.

As I grew older, I found a love for road racing, eventually making the jump full-time to Tarmac in 2015, jumping on board a Moto 3 with team SymCirrus Motorsport.

I really enjoyed my time riding the technical Moto 3s and learnt a lot from riding them that has helped me make the jump to Ducat’s. This year, I would like to build on a strong rookie season and become a consistent challenger for race wins.

Osian Jones, Kawasaki Ninja 400

British Junior Supersport

Hello, my name is Osian Jones and in 2021 I will be riding with SymCirrus Motorsport in my second year of the British Junior Supersport 400 category.

2020 was my first, and coming into a fresh series I was apprehensive to say the least of what the season had to offer. Early in the year my pace showed as I qualified third in the first qualifying of the year, and later on in the third round I was able to win.

Unfortunately, the next round I suffered a heavy fall at Oulton Park which brought my season to a premature end, however in 2020 many lessons were learnt for myself and the team.

In 2019 I was lucky enough to race in the second ever season of the British Talent Cup after being one of the very few selected out of all the applicants. In this series I was able to travel to tracks such as Bruno and Valencia and give my best shot at stepping on the top spot.

With the past two seasons getting better and better I definitely have high ambitions for 2021, but thanks to a good team around me I don’t doubt that 2021 could turn in to something special.

Annabel ‘Abbz’ Thomas, Kawasaki Ninja 400

British Junior Supersport

Annabel ‘Abbz’ Thomas is 17 years old and this year is racing in the British Junior Supersport Championship with SymCirrus Racing, on a Kawasaki Ninja 400.

Abbz has spent the last three years in BSB classes Motostars, British Talent Cup and the KTM Santander Cup. Before this, she won two British Junior Championships racing in The British Minibike Series.

Although Annabel has grown up in the paddock with father running a successful team, she showed no interest until nearly ten years old when she visited a ‘come and try’ day on a minimoto. From then, she was hooked!

Abbz has endured some serious injuries along the way, halting her progress. After finishing top rookie in her debut with the KTM Cup, she took up the challenge of the Motostars Championship on a Honda 250 and began pushing up the front runners, finishing in the top six regularly until at Brands Hatch where she high-sided and snapped both feet.

A year later whilst again pushing for those top six finishes, she was involved in a very serious incident at Thruxton with another rider running over her head when she fell, resulting in massive facial injuries.

Incredibly, after a six-hour operation to save her eye and replace the majority of the left side of her face with titanium, she raced just five weeks later at Assen, scoring very respectable eighth and tenth places.

Although she has amazed with her strength and determination during the pandemic, she has not been able to complete the surgery to finish her recovery and races without being able to breathe through her nose, as it has collapsed and with no tear duct so she experiences frequent discharge as she’s riding, which is very frustrating to say the least.

Despite this, she is determined to be the best she can, and cannot wait to race without these problems. She believes joining the SymCirrus team is the perfect move for her to step to the next level and push for those podiums and wins.

Annabel hasn’t really ever had a rider as an inspiration; she believes in herself. Although she has always been a Rossi fan, and draws a lot from riders in the paddock, she knows and talks too. All of which leads her to her goal of being Britain’s first female champion. First podiums, then wins, then fingers crossed! She cannot wait to get testing her new bike and start working with what she knows is a fantastic team.

MCN demonstrates how to fit new EBC brake discs and pads

MCN (Motorcycle News UK) has recently published an article about how to fit new brake discs and pads using EBC XC series discs to demonstrate. Former mechanic and MCN road tester, Bruce Dunn, illustrated his know-how in a photographic step-by step guide.

The discs they used to demonstrate are EBC XC series brake discs, fully floating, ultra lightweight discs that feature the patented S-Drive button system that allows the disc blades to contract and expand under braking heat. This is down to the square sided rivets that fit into the square drive pockets, which connect to rotor and hub to prevent rivet lock.

The article is called “Look after your brakes & they’ll look after you” and gives practical tips on brake maintenance using the recommended safety measures as suggested by workshop manuals. Bruce goes into detail in 10 photo steps showing how to first of all take the Aprilia’s brake system apart using the correct tools, remove the disc to check for run out limits, clean the parts correctly then re-install, testing for safety along the way. This is a very interesting, helpful article and well worth a read for the DIY motorcycle enthusiast. If in any doubt about doing your own brake installation work, always visit a reputable garage that will fit motorcycle brakes.
