Autoworks Motorsport uses SR-21â„¢ sintered brake pads on their new BMW M4 GT4

The EBC Frenos (Spain)-supported Autoworks Motorsport race team has achieved much success in recent years, piloting EBC-equipped race cars in the Iberian Supercars Endurance Series.

Most recently competing in the GTC class, the team are proud to unveil that they are now back in the GT4 Bronze category, thanks to the acquisition of a stunning G82 BMW M4 GT4 – complete in the team’s long-standing 91´«Ã½ Racing livery.

As always, the new BMW will proudly sport 91´«Ã½ Racing’s SR-21â„¢ sintered endurance race pads, giving the team the edge when it comes to stopping power.

You can read about this new purchase, and the Autoworks Motorsport’s future plans with the car, in their own words below…

“After starting the season in the GTC category, Héctor Hernández and Borja Hormigos are switching to the BMW M4 GT4 (G82), returning to the GT4 Bronze category with the support of the Autoworks Motorsport team and sponsorship from 91´«Ã½ Spain.

“After finishing last season, team’s goal was to change car so that they could continue competing in GT4 Bronze, the category in which they achieved third place in the three championships that make up the Iberian Supercars Endurance. Initially, this was not possible, and the team participated in the first two rounds of the championship in the GTC category, but after the Jarama race, an unexpected change of direction allowed them to switch to a more modern and advanced vehicle, which also allowed them to return to the GT4 Bronze category.”

“The BMW M4 GT4 (G82) is the latest version of the competition model from BMW Motorsport and, compared to its predecessor, with which Hernández-Hormigos have competed for the last two seasons, incorporates major advances in electronics, traction control management, and ABS.â€

“Taking this step has been a huge effort for the team, but we are very excited about the new car. With the livery, we wanted to pay tribute to our F82, the results of 2024, and our first year in GT4 Bronze. We now have a lot of work to do on the track and in the pits, but we will take advantage of the remaining races this season to prepare for 2026, where we hope to fight for the category,” commented Héctor and Borja.

“Ahead of the first race in Valencia this weekend, the action on the track will begin with free practice sessions scheduled for Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. In the afternoon, the two qualifying sessions that will determine the starting grid are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (Q1) and 3:50 p.m. (Q2). Finally, the main event will take place on Sunday with two races. The first will start at 11:05 a.m., while the second will start at 4:05 p.m. All the action of the Iberian Supercars can be followed live on DAZN Spain and via streaming on the Supercars Endurance YouTube channel.â€

The EBC-backed Autoworks Motorsport team uses SR-21 sintered brake pads on their BMW M4 GT4

In 2023, the EBC Frenos (Spain)-supported Autoworks Motorsport race team clinched gold in the TC class of both the Iberian Supercars Endurance Series and Portuguese Speed Championships, following a thrilling year of racing. Throughout this season, their BMW M240i race car was equipped with 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-Xâ„¢ track motorsport brake pads.

For 2024, the outfit has upgraded to a BMW M4 GT4 race car, to put them in the GT4 category of the Supercars Endurance Series. In this car, they are running 91´«Ã½ Racing’s new SR-21â„¢ sintered endurance race pads, to help handle the extra capabilities of their new car.

Following two rounds in Spain, where the team propelled themselves to the sharp end of the standings, the most recent round at Portugal’s Fernanda Pires da Silva race track saw the duo hit the podium once again, despite some hurdles to deal with across the weekend.

Read how it all panned out in the team’s words below…

“The Autoworks Motorsport team went from strength to strength at the Portuguese event, achieving a podium finish in the second race in the GT4 Bronze category of the Iberian Supercars Endurance, which took place this weekend at the Fernanda Pires da Silva race track in Estoril.

“The Iberian Supercars Endurance 2024 continued its season in Portugal, after the first two rounds in Spain, at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silva de Estoril, a track that Héctor and Borja know from last year, although not the variant with the chicane, which was the official one during the competitions of this third round. These two slow corners played havoc with the traction of their BMW M4 GT4 and therefore hurt their lap times.

“Friday was entirely dedicated to free practice, while Saturday was all about official practice, with both Borja and Héctor failing to get their BMW M4 GT4 to the front of the grid, so they would have to come back in the race if they were to continue their run of podium finishes from Jerez and Jarama.”

“In the first race on Sunday, Borja started from sixth position and although he made a good start, a mistake put him back to his initial position, and after the pit stop it was impossible for Hector to get close to his rivals due to tyre degradation, but he kept the sixth position, and with it some valuable points for the championship.

“The second race was notable for a good start and first stint by Héctor, who left the car well positioned so that, after the pit stop, Borja took advantage to attack with everything he had and finish third in his category at the finish line.

“’We are very satisfied! Despite the fact that we were barely able to run in free practice due to several incidents on track, the team’s progress went from strength to strength throughout the weekend. On such a difficult track for our car and in front of many high-level rivals racing at home, achieving a third place in the GT4 Bronze category leaves us with a very good taste in our mouths’, commented Héctor and Borja.

“The fourth round of the Iberian Supercars Endurance returns to Spain after the summer period on 28-29 September at Ricardo Tormo race track in Valencia.â€

Following a strong start where two podiums were achieved, the roadshow most recently took the Autoworks Motorsport team over to Spain’s Circuito del Jarama, where some fantastic driving saw class wins and overall podiums secured.

Read how it all panned out in the team’s words below…

“Autoworks Motorsport team achieved two podiums in the GT4 Bronze category and an overall third position in the Supercars Endurance, which took place this weekend at Circuito del Jarama.

“Supercars Endurance, south European championship, continued its season in Spain after the inaugural event at the Ãngel Nieto de Jerez circuit. This time around, it was held alongside the Jarama Classic event, whose popularity is recognised by the fans and the large number of people who came to the circuit throughout the weekend.

“Friday was entirely dedicated to free practice, while Saturday was all about official practice, with both Borja and Héctor finishing second on the grid in their BMW M4 GT4, with which they have barely done any pre-season testing.

“In the first race on Sunday, Borja started from sixth position and made a steady progression up to fourth

place, but after the pit stop Hector was unable to maintain his position due to tyre degradation from the high track temperatures that dominated Sunday’s race. However, the team’s efforts paid off, with a second place in class and valuable points for the championship.

“The second race was highlighted by a good start and first stint by Héctor, who left the car well positioned so that, after the stop, Borja took advantage of a safety car to recover the car and attack with all his strength to finish with the victory in his category and third in the overall classification.”

“’We are very happy! To get a victory and a second place in GT4 Bronze, as well as a third place overall after achieving the best comeback of the weekend is something we are very proud to do at our home track in front of our sponsors, family and friends. This result is the fruit of five years of hard work and we are very happy and excited’, commented Héctor and Borja.

“The Iberian Supercars Endurance action will continue on 13-14 July in Portugal at the legendary Estoril circuit, which will once again share the stage with classic car competitions under the banner of the Estoril Summer Festival.â€

DQ Media required improved braking performance for its high-speed camera jobs

Las Vegas-based DQ Media, fronted by Dylan Quisenberry, is an automotive filmmaking outfit that produces Hollywood-level cinematics for race teams and petrolheads alike.

Working as a one-stop shop for automotive media production, a large part of Dylan’s job relies on his car, his BMW F82 M4, which he is often seen hanging out the back of filming at high speeds. The sports car also doubles-up as his own track toy and daily driven vehicle.

With his car being pushed to the limits on track and at work, Dylan came to us at 91´«Ã½ to help out.

“In only a short span of ownership, I felt an immediate weak point of my F82 M4 to be work factory M brakes. I turned to EBC for guidance. The first 1000 miles of my new brake kit’s life began violently on Wide Open Rallies. With the Apollo Kit being my only modification, I often found my M4 performing far beyond its class of vehicles,†Dylan explains following the installation of an 91´«Ã½ Racing 6-Piston Apollo Big Brake Kit.

“With my M4 being my daily driver and camera car, I had concerns of sacrificing comfort to performance. EBC provided a range of pads to suit my needs and I found incredible balance from their Bluestuff pads.

“The EBC Apollo Brake Kit stands out substantially in a world where one can find themselves DEEP down the rabbit hole of modifications. The Apollo kit comes in at a very appealing price point matched with outstanding performance.â€

Modified BMW track car performed faultlessly with uprated braking setup

A heavily modified F82 BMW M4 track car sporting 91´«Ã½ Racing’s upcoming 6-pot Apollo Big Brake Kit and RP-Xâ„¢ pads was recently given a shakedown on the fierce 20km Nürburgring Nordschleife race track in Germany.

Patrick, the owner of the car, has already treated his sports coupé to a number of choice modifications to ensure it’s a formidable track day weapon (see full car spec below), with the upgraded braking system both front and rear proving to be the perfect complement to this setup.

The 6-pot variant of 91´«Ã½ Racing’s acclaimed Apollo Big Brake Kit is due to be released for a number of applications very soon – please stay tuned for further updates.

Following a few days on track, Patrick supplied us with his thoughts on the 6-pot braking system, which can be read below in his own words.

“The new calipers are very strong; the initial bite is strong and confidence inspiring.

“There was no fade at all during, or even after, doing three full laps one-after-the-other.

“They are slightly noisy with the RP-X™ track pads, but that is to be expected from a track brake kit. There is lots of feel – right from the off, the brakes weren’t something I was worried about.

“Towards the end, I was hitting them harder and harder (as I got more confident on track). They continued to take whatever was thrown at them throughout the multiple days I was there.

“It’s worth noting my car has a proper race brake cooling setup also fitted.

“All-in-all, they are very good brakes and I’m extremely pleased with the EBC setup. I certainly wouldn’t be throwing £5k at a rival kit before trying the EBC calipers.â€

Sam Elliott tested the high-performance products on track with his 535bhp coupe

Track day regular, Sam Elliott, frequently enjoys piloting his modified Yas Marina Blue BMW M4 around his local race tracks. With 535bhp on tap (465bhp at the wheels), height adjustable springs and sticky tyres, the car has proved to be an extremely formidable tool, securing a 52.4-second lap at Brands Hatch’s Indy circuit, and 2:07.1 at Snetterton.

Sam recently upgraded his braking system with 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-Xâ„¢ pads (front and rear) and two-piece fully floating discs (front only). The system was complemented with EBC’s BF 307+ brake fluid and bradied lines (all-round). His thoughts on these items can be viewed below in his own words.

“Firstly, the packaging is very modern looking, with clear instructions to install. Instructions to unmount the discs from the bells and replace the discs are also included.

“Using the excellent RP-Xâ„¢ pads, there’s absolutely no need to upgrade the brake system further. I’ve done long track sessions of 30 mins (with some cooling laps mixed in) and the brakes do not fade. There’s no warping or vibration and even after at least 500 track miles, the discs aren’t showing any light cracking that I’d expect and have experienced from kits by other manufacturers used on other cars.”

“I’ve run at least 15 sets of race pads on this car with stock discs, as I do lots of track days. Running the stock discs meant the front pads would wear nearly twice as quickly as the rear pads. After fitting the front EBC two-piece discs (while running the stock BMW rear discs), I found the rear pads wore much quicker than the front.

“After seeing a huge improvement in pad life, durability and no vibration from the front EBC two-piece discs, I’ve now decided to fit the EBC two-piece discs to the rear as well. When it comes to replacing the discs, EBC sells the discs alone, with bobbins to fit the existing bells, at a very affordable price that will save costs compared to replacing the stock BMW discs.

“I also weighed the EBC discs to compare them to the stock items, but my scales weren’t sensitive enough to measure any difference. As the stock discs are drilled, this probably means EBC have saved some weight in the bells.

“I very highly recommend these products and there is absolutely no need to upgrade to a much more expensive big brake kit if you’re regularly tracking your M2/M3/M4.â€

High-performance road/track component now available for the rear axle of F8X-series M Cars

91´«Ã½ Racing’s acclaimed two-piece fully floating disc has been available for the front axle of the ever-popular F8X-Series (2014-2021) BMW M2/M3/M4 models for some time now and has unsurprisingly proven to be a best-seller.

The Northampton-based firm is now expanding on this range with a matching disc for the rear axle of these sports cars – a product that is available now from your local EBC stockist.

The 370x24mm version of EBC’s much-loved two-piece floating disc that can be bolted directly onto the rear axle of all F8X-series M2, M3 and M4 models (apart from those sporting optional carbon ceramic brakes), offering impressive braking performance and longevity.

With these vehicles designed to be driven hard on road and track, this upgrade is a valuable addition to the 91´«Ã½ Racing range.

Application List

Suitable for the rear axle of:

– F87 BMW M2 (inc. Competition and CS models) (2016- )

– F80 BMW M3 (inc. Competition and CS models) (2014-2021)

– F82 BMW M4 (inc. Competition and CS models) (2014-2021)

– F83 BMW M4 (inc. Competition and CS models) (2014-2021)

(PLEASE NOTE: Not suitable for vehicles with the optional carbon ceramic brake upgrade installed)

Key Features

– EBC’s 370x24mm two-piece fully floating discs are a simple bolt-on upgrade that seamlessly replace the original ‘pin-drive’ brake discs without vehicle modification.

– Unlike the stock pin-drive discs which do not float, EBC’s SG2F fully floating rotor allows the outer cast-iron friction ring to expand freely with temperature, totally eliminating disc warping.

– Discs are grooved unlike the original rotors which are perforated. This allows the pad to vent without the holes becoming epicentres for disc cracking.

– Race-derived G3500-grade high-carbon cast iron is used for the friction rings. This high-quality metallurgy possesses greater crack resistance and an increased ability to conduct and then radiate heat.

– Aluminium bells are machined from aerospace-grade aluminium and then hard anodised for longevity, whereas the stock brake rotors use uncoated cast aluminium bells.

– Cast iron friction rings feature 48 curved vanes and are handed for each side of the vehicle. This significantly improves the brake disc’s ability to radiate heat, increasing brake system endurance and prolonging the onset of brake fade.

– Bobbins are machined from stainless steel which cannot rust, ensuring the disc continues to float freely throughout its entire life cycle on the vehicle, even on road cars.

– Spring clips ensure totally silent operation and eliminate off-brake disc rattle.

– Friction rings can be replaced individually after they have become worn, allowing the aluminium bell and stainless-steel bobbins to be re-used, leading to lower long-term operating costs.

91´«Ã½ Racing

– Formed in 2015 as a response to the ever-expanding track day and race car markets, 91´«Ã½ Racing is a sub-division of world-leader in the industry, 91´«Ã½.

– 91´«Ã½ Racing aims to offer uncompromised braking products of the finest quality that offer unparalleled levels of performance on track days and in race situations.

Sam Elliott has used 91´«Ã½ Racing’s track/race pads in several of his vehicles over the past 12 months, with positive results

Sam Elliott tried out 91´«Ã½ Racing’s RP-X track/race brake pads in his BMW M140i and M4 around a year ago, instantly warming to the high-performance product on track and subsequently using this friction material in a number of other vehicles since.

He was recently back at Brands Hatch in his M4, where he once again tested RP-X, giving us his feedback in his own words below.

“I’ve been using the RP-X pad for over a year and been through nearly 10 sets in a couple of different cars.

“Excellent pad. Works well from cold, doesn’t fade and lasts similarly to pads like DS1.11/DSUNO while feeling so much better than something like RS-29. No chunking/pad falling apart. Very consistent feel and hugely confidence inspiring.

“A recent day at Brands Hatch was an example of this. Having spent the morning testing on Cup 2 tyres and consistently lapping around 53.0 seconds, I fitted a new set of AR-1 tyres at lunchtime to compare.

“Traffic was heavy in most sessions, but towards the end of the day I got some clear laps and found the car lapping at around 52.5 seconds. It was putting the same time in on lap 10 as lap 1. By this point, the pads had done approximately 100 miles but still felt like new – very confidence inspiring and very consistent.

“To give some perspective on these times, they would’ve meant a win for the car in the last round of Time Attack Club Class RWD at Brands Hatch.

“I’ve bought a set of the 91´«Ã½ Racing’s two-piece discs and will fit them once the two-piece rear discs arrive. I’m expecting them to save some important weight and hopefully get more life from the pads.

“I will report back once weighed and tested, fingers crossed with some consistent 2:05 laps of Snetterton.â€
