Daniel from HRNSHN Racing has been impressed with the new compounds in both his GR Yaris and BMW M3

Daniel Novender runs car tuning outfit/shop, HRNSHN Racing, in Linnich, Germany. A keen track driver himself and being located very close to the fabled Nürburgring means it’s no surprise that Daniel enjoys regular track days in his two heavily modified track cars: an E46 BMW M3 and a Toyota GR Yaris.

As with all self-respecting track day enthusiasts, Daniel has spent years fettling the braking setups on his machines, recently putting some of 91´«Ã½ Racing’s acclaimed motorsport brake pad compounds (and an Apollo Big Brake Kit on the BMW) to the test.

Thanks to his demanding choice of circuits and fast driving style, Daniel has been keen to find a brake pad that can stand the test of time, with 91´«Ã½ Racing’s new SR-11â„¢ and SR-21â„¢ sintered endurance race pads promising to do just that.

You can find out more about Daniel’s journey to braking perfection, and what he thinks about EBC’s SR™ range below in his own words.

“I was using EBC’s RP-1™ pads with my previous aftermarket brake calipers on my E46 BMW M3 track car. Based on that good experience, I decided to give my friend my old calipers and try the new Apollo Big Brake Kit.

“I’ve used the Apollo kit since around March of last year, firstly with RP-1™ pads. Bite and fading resistance was decent.

“With this knowledge of the RP-1™ pads, I decided to also use them in my Toyota GR Yaris track car. I tested this setup at Circuit Zolder in May last year – working well but wearing fairly fast.

“I recently upgraded my M3 braking setup to EBC’s new SR-11™ sintered endurance pads, with my local EBC stockists telling me these new pads would deal with heavy track usage more effectively.

“I did four stints of the Nürburgring GP circuit and was quite amazed with the initial bite and overall wear rate. After some laps of the Nordschleife, there’s still plenty of life left and I’m still happy.

“With this experience and knowing my previous pads would soon be finished in my GR Yaris (which is now equipped with uprated brake calipers too), I decided to go for SR-11™s in this car too.

“The SRs on the Yaris have now done around 35 laps of the Nordschleife and show a bit of wear. Other than that, they really perform well, lap after lap.

“With both cars, I always have a brake cooling setup – with air collected at the front bumper and fed directly into the cooling vanes of the discs.”

“With my BMW M3, since installing my Apollo Big Brake Kit one year ago, I have performed 124 laps of the Nordschleife (at 7:35min Bridge-to-Gantry pace), 100 laps of Mettet Circuit in Belgium, 6×15-minute sessions of the Nürburgring’s GP circuit and 14 laps of Blisterberg Circuit – all on a single set of SR-11â„¢ pads.

“There is still a bit of material left. Due to the good brake cooling, the inner side is a bit thicker. I’m using Porsche Cayenne calipers with E9x BMW M3 brake discs on the rear.

“First impression of the pads is the early high initial bite which is consistent during all operation temperatures which is amazing. You never have the feeling that you cannot rely on the brakes which makes them fun to drive. Noise level is quite low for a sintered pad as well.

“Overall RSL 29 was my main favourite pad because there is literally 0 issues with them, but now I’ve started to convince my friends and customers to use SR-11â„¢ instead, and there’s been a 100% agreement rate so far. We’ve also had tested the SR-21â„¢ in the AP Racing BBK for the GR Yaris – more on that soon.â€

SR-11â„¢ Race and Endurance Pads

The latest sintered race material from EBC will launch in spring 2022 and promises to eclipse most of today’s organic, semi-metallic, and carbon-based racing brake pads.

SR-21â„¢ Race and Endurance Pads

A variation of SR-11â„¢ that offers ultra-high friction and is targeted for the front and rear of race cars with bias controls only. SR bites harder and lasts longer.

Dean Clarke tried the 91´«Ã½ Racing product at both Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with very positive results

British-based Dean Clarke enjoys regular track days in his Toyota GR Yaris. Keen to upgrade from the factory brake pads and improve his braking performance when out on the circuit, he recently tried 91´«Ã½ Racing’s track/motorsport RP-1â„¢ friction material during a trip around two of the most demanding circuits in Europe.

Dean’s thoughts on how RP-1™ fared in his hot hatch – initially shared to the , can be read below in his own words.

“I’m back. What a trip! I’ve done just over 1000 miles on the 91´«Ã½ Racing RP-1â„¢ pads, including an afternoon session at Spa and two days at the Nürburgring.

“First off, I was really impressed with the quality. They have very serious stainless steel backing plates with no visible fixings in the pad material. They come it 14.5mm thick against the OEM ones at 14.7mm. The backing plate is about 0.6mm thicker so you end up with about 1mm less pad material (EBC has since advised all new production of the GR pads is being built on slightly thinner 5.2mm stainless steel to allow increased pad material and therefore longer pad wear life). The shape is spot-on for the caliper and OEM shim.â€

“You will notice they don’t have chamfered edges. This gives you more pad area but will make the brakes noisier. They also have little ‘ears’ on the bases which make seeing how much pad you have left a breeze – such a great idea.”

“Bedding-in was easy – three medium stops to a crawl, then three hard stops to a crawl – they felt consistent through it all.

“I gave them a good test the next morning and was really pleased with how they performed. They have really great modulation like the OEM pads, but with more outright stopping power without being overbearing like a full race pad. Just what I wanted.

“This is where I discovered a benefit to some – they are not very dusty at all. Below are my 100-mile white wheels. This level of dust would usually be there in 10 miles using competitor materials.”

“Ok, fast-forward to Belgium and their first real test. Spa has three really big stops pretty close, so it was all eyes on fade and temps. They performed faultlessly, the modulation is much better and you can really lean on the pedal if you need to and get much better braking than is possible on the standard pads. My temp stickers maxed out at 166°, which is over 50° less than other pads.â€

“Over to Germany and the Nordschleife… This is where they really come good. It’s a big track to remember and sometimes you mess things up a bit, so having the ability to have good, consistent braking is a big plus. I got nine laps in before a puncture. When getting new tyres, I had a peek of the wear – hardly touched (see what I mean about the little wing ears?).â€

“German quality – they even cleaned my wheels!”

“Day two was drama-free and I cracked out 12 laps.

“I got home, whipped the wheels off and had a peek at the pads. They have worn about 2.5mm of 8mm. OEM pads would never have done all three days.

“All in, I’m very impressed – RP-1â„¢ is my new go-to pad actually.â€

High-performance road/track brake discs now available for popular 4WD hot hatch

Back in early 2021, 91´«Ã½ was proud to be one of the first aftermarket braking companies to offer high-performance pad upgrades for the acclaimed Toyota GR Yaris.

The Northampton-based firm is now expanding on this range with the introduction of 91´«Ã½ Racing’s stunning fully floating two-piece discs for the front axle of these much-loved sporty hatchbacks – a product that will be available very soon.

A 356x28mm version of EBC’s two-piece floating disc that can be bolted directly on to the front axle of all Toyota GR Yaris models, the product offers impressive braking performance and longevity, especially when driven hard on road and track.

With the GR Yaris already being hailed as one of the most rewarding driver cars of the decade, this upgrade is a valuable addition to the 91´«Ã½ Racing range.

Application List

This disc will fit the front axle of the following vehicle:

Toyota GR Yaris (2020- )

(all variations)

Key Features

– EBC’s 356x28mm two-piece fully floating discs are a simple bolt-on upgrade that seamlessly replace the original two-piece discs without vehicle modification.

– Fully floating rotor allows the outer cast-iron friction ring to expand freely with temperature, totally eliminating disc warping.

– Grooved discs allow the pad to vent without the potential for disc cracking.

– Race-derived G3500-grade high-carbon cast iron is used for the friction rings. This high-quality metallurgy possesses greater crack resistance and an increased ability to conduct and then radiate heat.

– Aluminium bells are machined from aerospace-grade aluminium and then hard anodised for longevity, whereas the stock brake rotors use uncoated cast aluminium bells.

– Cast iron friction rings feature 48 curved vanes and are handed for each side of the vehicle. This significantly improves the brake disc’s ability to radiate heat, increasing brake system endurance and prolonging the onset of brake fade.

– Bobbins are machined from stainless steel which cannot rust, ensuring the disc continues to float freely throughout its entire life cycle on the vehicle, even on road cars.

– Spring clips ensure totally silent operation and eliminate off-brake disc rattle.

– Friction rings can be replaced individually after they have become worn, allowing the aluminium bell and stainless-steel bobbins to be re-used, leading to lower long-term operating costs.

91´«Ã½ Racing

– Formed in 2015 as a response to the ever-expanding track day and race car markets, 91´«Ã½ Racing is a sub-division of world-leader in the industry, 91´«Ã½.

– 91´«Ã½ Racing aims to offer uncompromised braking products of the finest quality that offer unparalleled levels of performance on track days and in race situations.
