The Kent-based outfit came out on top of this fiercely contested series at the final round in Portugal

The Gigglepin Racing team has at the sharp end of various international off-road racing championships in recent years, being proudly supported by 91´«Ã½ throughout this time.

Winning the popular Ultra 4 Championship in 2019 and , the outfit, fronted by Jim Marsden, were keen to reclaim the top trophy as the 2023 season began to wrap up.

Once again, it all came down to the final round in Portugal, where Marsden and co-driver Joe Seymour Smith entered one of Gigglepin’s fearsome LS7 7-litre V8 powered machines that, like all of Gigglepin’s other machines, proudly sports 91´«Ã½â€™ Bluestuff NDX pads all-round.

You can read how the weekend unfolded in the team’s own words below.

“Gigglepin Racing are the 2023 European Ultra 4 Champions!

“Ultra 4 is the Formula 1 of off-road racing. Its high-adrenaline, fast-paced and action-packed format makes it a firm favourite with racers and crowds around the world. The European Championship is always hard fought, and this year was no different with teams from across Europe battling to take the crown.

“Step forward Jim Marsden and the Gigglepin Racing crew. Winners of this title in 2019 and runners up in 2022. They were looking to go one better and regain their title in 2023.
Racing over three rounds in Poland, Great Britain and Portugal fighting the terrain, distance, the weather and high-class opposition, it was never going to be easy.

“But the Gigglepin race team are exceptional, with crew from UK, Malta, Portugal and Italy – they are experts at overcoming the odds. The championship came down to fierce final battle that was decided under sunny skies at King of Portugal.

“With Jim and Co-driver Alex Wilson keeping Belgium powerhouse that it is the Ruel Sport team just behind them in points to secure their second European title in four years.

“This season was about perseverance, teamwork and dedication. The hundreds of hours in the workshop and the late nights in the pits. But none of it is possible without the incredible team, our partners and our sponsors. So, thank you one and all!

“Now it’s time to rebuild the race cars and get ready for the 2024 season racing as the defending Ultra 4 European Champions.â€

The team competed in both the GRAF Adventure Series and King of Portugal races recently

The Gigglepin off-road team recently ventures to Portugal to compete in two fierce off-road races: both the GRAF Adventure Series and the ‘King of Portugal’ – the final round of the 2022 European Ultra 4 Championship.

These events were a chance for the team to unleash their all-new vehicle, nicknamed ‘Mistress’ – an LS7 7-litre V8 powered monster that, like all of Gigglepin’s other machines, proudly sports 91´«Ã½â€™ Bluestuff NDX pads all-round.

You can read how both events panned out in the team’s own words below.

GRAF Adventure Series

“It’s been three years since our last adventures in Portugal and it was time to get back into the action with two events – first, the four-day GRAF Adventure Series event (comprising special stages that vary from difficult to downright insanity!) and second, the King of Portugal event – the final round jewel in the crown of the 2022 European Ultra 4 Championship.â€

Day 1

“We used our new heavily modified vehicle ‘Mistress’ for this event. This Ultra 4 racer is not designed for winch challenges, but we made several modifications, including fitting a rear winch, and we were super confident we could make it.

“It all started with two night stages on the Wednesday night, and we got off to a flyer, hitting the fastest times in both stages. A five-minute penalty for hitting a tape dropped us down to 8th – not the start we wanted.â€

Day 2

“The next day, we were greeted by heavy rain and temperatures in single figures as we headed out for eight hours of racing across 10 special stages. Thankfully, the weather gods had a change of heart and after getting drenched on the drive to the site, blue skies appeared and the sun was soon beating down once again.

“We were on good form in the stages and took a few stage wins with co-driver Chris Abel working hard to run the winch lines as Mistress showed us what she can do. But a further 20 minutes of penalties saw us still floundering down the table in 7th position. We needed to up our game!â€

Day 3

“This day saw us returning to the amazing river stages that GRAF is famous for. Huge rocks,
dried out riverbeds and pools of water, in vast, technical stages. It was time to start showing these guys what this car could do, and we laid down fastest time after fastest time with zero penalties.

“Only one more day of battling to go, and we can felt like we were catching the leaders.

“But first, we had two more night stages. As midnight approached, we took to the hills. Our Lazer Lights blazed into the darkness as our Maxxis tyres hunted for grip on the Portuguese rocks. We needn’t have worried as we put down fast times; winning one stage and coming second on the other.

“The next day, we woke to find the scores are up, and we were back in the game! We had blazed up to 3rd place – only a few seconds behind second place and five minutes behind a flying Helder da Rocha.â€

Day 4

“This was a new site for the GRAF, and when we arrived, we found a heavily forested site littered with giant boulders. It looked more like a giant’s playground! It was staggeringly beautiful. Our first stage was insane with four cliff faces to winch, and tight, technical areas through shallow rooted trees. We started well but it soon turned to hell after an error put us on our roof and we left the stage with a DNF and three penalties! It was an absolute disaster. We consolidated and gathered our thoughts, and in the next stages we lay down good times. In the fourth stage, we just couldn’t get finished in time and take yet another DNF. This is a bad day and getting worse! We soldiered on and took two fastest times, but in our penultimate stage, reverse gear decided it didn’t want to play anymore. As we entered the final stage, we knew another DNF was looming. It wasn’t a good day for the team.

“But we did get to watch our great friends Helder da Rocha and Flavio Gnomes lay down a masterclass. They were the only team to clear the final stage and by doing so sealed a well-deserved victory.

“The prize giving at GRAF is always fantastic and we were there with our team, Brian and Thomas from Malta, as well as co-driver Chris Abel and driver James Marsden enjoying a superb feast to celebrate this fine event. Then it was prizegiving. The last day had killed our chances of winning, but we hit the podium with a 3rd-place in 44 Class, as well as 4th overall. It’s not the result we wanted but sometimes you have to roll with it and there was no time to waste as we had to get Mistress ready for King of Portugal which is only four days after this event ended.”

King of Portugal

“Car preparation for most events takes weeks to complete, but we only had four days to get Mistress battle-ready for King of Portugal – the final event and the jewel in the crown of the 2022 European Ultra 4 Championship.

“Chris Abel flew home after co-driving at GRAF, and Michael Whitting flew in on the Monday to bolster the team and help with the preparation. So, a team of four tasked with changing gearboxes, differentials, removing rear winches, changing air intakes and straightening this girl’s battered body panels. Thomas and Brian, alongside Jim and James, worked late into the evenings and started early to be sure that everything was just right.

“Then on Wednesday morning, we left the workshops of ‘By Toucas’ and Flavio Gnomes headed to Vimioso and King of Portugal!

Day 1

“We arrived to find an already-packed stadium where 65 teams would be based for the next three days of intense Ultra 4 race action. James Ayre flew in late that evening to join Jim as co-driver. The plan was simple: get out in front and stay there.

“First up was the prologue. An 8km super stage that is fast, furious and with plenty of big jumps. Emmanuel Costa set the pace and we left the line nearly last in our class. Mistress was incredible, the thunder of her LS7 7 litre V8 engine, beefy Spidertrax axles and monster Fox shocks soaked up the punishing course with style. We crossed the line in a cloud of dust, park her and rush back to find out if we have done enough…

“We had smashed it. Half a second faster than our nemesis Emmanuel Costa. It’s the perfect start to our campaign.â€

Day 2

“The sun was shining and promising high temps of up to 27°C. It was going to be a long day, with five 38km laps and with three super tough special stages to contend with around the course.

“We had the honour of leading out the field and we roared to the line, 650bhp surging us on into the Portuguese terrain. Only 190km to go!

“Everything was going well for the first 36km, and we had pulled out an eight-minute lead over the chasing pack. “James, I have lost throttle response†I say over the radio as Mistress rolls to the side of the track. It’s a bitter blow when everything was going so well. But we never surrender and as I pulled her apart looking for the fault, James is already sprinting to the pits to get parts. An hour later and a new throttle body fitted, we were back on track and hauling. But two laps later it came to a halt again as the transfer case decided it didn’t want to stay attached to the gearbox. So, with only three of five laps completed, we had to retire with heavy hearts. Back in the pits the guys soon tore down Mistress and start making the repairs so we could be ready for the final day.â€

Day 3

“The scores were not good. After the disastrous previous day, we were languishing down in 29th position. But we also knew we had a pace that few could match, and I couldn’t wait to get started.

“The cars left the line in 30-second intervals, and we had five 27km laps ahead of us, but this time it got really serious with the monstrous dinosaur eggs and two special zones to test our skills. It was going to be a tough day.

“We left the line and Mistress felt fantastic! It wasn’t not long before we were carving through the field and making fast decisive overtakes on quality opposition. At the dinosaur eggs, we had already caught cars in the top ten. but couldn’t find the bypass line and had to sit in traffic wasting 20 valuable minutes. Once again, Mistress delivered and we passed another four cars on the massive boulders. We crossed the line to finish lap one and we had made up 18 places! It was a great start and we powered into the dust clouds.

“On lap two, we passed another four cars in the first 5km on the slower, technical rocks. For the next four laps Mistress delivered and we kept up a continuous pace.

“We reached the finish line and crossed it in physical third place, having passed everyone left us pondering what would have been, if we had not had the problems that we did.

“The prize ceremony at King of Portugal is always exceptional. With over a thousand people in attendance, the local town pulled out all the stops, providing food, wine and entertainment. Who knew bagpipes were a Portuguese invention?!

“The scores were announced and we were 7th overall for the event, which is a great comeback after starting the final day in 29th position.

“But the prizegiving was not over, as this race was the championship decider for Ultra 4 European Championship. “In second place, in the Championship, Jim Marsden and Gigglepin Racing!†What a shock, what a surprise and what a team. The months of hard work had paid off, but sadly we couldn’t celebrate for long as we had to leave at 4am to catch a ferry back to the UK.â€

“So, it’s a huge thank-you to our team at home and at the race track. They are Staci Reeson, James Ayre, Helder da Rocha, Chris Abel, Michael Whitting, Thomas Tanti, Brian Aguis, Jack and Tom Saunders and the James’s. Then it’s a huge shout out to our sponsors and partners that work so hard behind the scenes to make this all happen.

“Now it’s time to strip down, rebuild and get ready for a new season and new adventures!â€

The outfit’s heavily modified V8-powered Defender-based off-roader features 91´«Ã½ Bluestuff pads all-round

The Gigglepin off-road team were back out in force recently, for the first ever Tactical Off-Road Racing [TORR] event held by organisers The Welsh Xtrem in the scenic Presteigne, Wales.

Once again piloted by company owner, Jim Marsden and with Alex Wilson in the co-driver seat, Gigglepin’s ‘Bad Penny’ – a 6.2-litre V8-powered Defender-based off-road weapon – muscled its way to outright victory across the weekend, coming out above over 40 rivals from across the UK and Ireland.

Gigglepin opt for 91´«Ã½â€™ Bluestuff pads all round on their Bad Penny machine.

You can read how the weekend unfolded in their own words below.

“Tactical Off-Road Racing is right up our street. Think racing meets extreme off-road and you have discovered TORR 2022 – a new event at a new venue in Wales devised by the legendary The Welsh Xtrem crew.

“It was time once again to take Bad Penny into battle and we could not wait to get started.

“With a field of over 40 of the best teams from across the UK and Ireland, this was going to be three hard-fought days in searing 30-degree heat, with the sun beating down on the normally rain-soaked valleys.

“Alex Wilson was back on co-driving duties, with Gigglepin technician Jack and his dad, Tom Saunders looking after Bad Penny in the pits. Staci Reeson takes care of tactics and Jim takes control of the beast they call Bad Penny.

“We love this new style of racing; you can be tactical and devise your attacks. With each heat, you have one hour to complete the three laps and at the end of each lap your clock stops so you can then plan your next assault. It’s like chess with V8 race cars.

“After a random hat draw, we leave the line in 16th position and soon catch lap traffic and heavy dust as we battle to the finish to find we had only managed sixth position. It’s not a great start and we have work to do.”

Saturday

“The sun is still with us and the whole team is smiles as we line up for another day of racing.â€

Heat 1

“This time, we are leading out and make the most of the clear track to deliver another first place.

Heat 2:

“We are not having it our own way this time and the boys from Blackbird steal the heat win away from us by nine seconds as we get caught in lap traffic. This race is on! And only the final to go.

“Now it’s really racing; two laps back-to-back and everyone lined up behind Bad Penny hoping that we make a mistake.

Ìý

Sunday

“The sun is shining once again and it’s time to get the party started.â€

Heat 1:

“We start sixth and battle hard, finishing first on adjusted time and it’s just the start we need.â€

Heat 2:

“Again, we start in sixth and pick up the pace to fight through the pack to be first on adjusted time.â€

Heat 3:

“And we are flying! Bad Penny is chewing up the miles and we make it a clean sweep of first-place runs after some great battles out on track with some tough winching required.

“We thunder off the line, our 6.2-litre V8 engine howling as Fox shocks soaking up the terrain as our Maxxis Trepador tyres find the grip to carry us she hammers the Welsh hills. Alex is working like the pro he is and has us clear of the winch sections before anyone can challenge us, and we stay hammer-down into the final lap. Bad Penny is a car like no other and she sprints to the finish to take the win at the very first TORR race against a skilled driver line up.

“It’s fantastic to be back on the top step and winning again.

“A massive thank you to everyone that turned up to support this event. A bigger ‘Thank you’ to the event staff and marshals for making it happen.â€

“And a huge ‘Hell Yeah!’ to our sponsors and supporters for always believing in us and giving us the tools we need. Plus, our families at home that support us and allow us to race hard.

“But most importantly, this one is for a special friend that Jim started off-roading with over 25 years ago. The man who sadly left us recently. Ben Sugden we miss you every day and wish you could have seen us fly, how you would have laughed and smiled. That win was for you.

“Now it’s time to get our new car, ‘Mistress’ ready for the Ultra4 King of Poland. We’ll see you there…â€

EBC-equipped off-road outfit dominates at Lincolnshire weekend endurance event

The Gigglepin off-road outfit recently packed up their gear and headed for their first competitive event since October, in the shape of the BFG Essential at the gruelling Kirton Off-Road Centre in Lincolnshire.

This annual event promises a long weekend of mud-fuelled endurance racing on a mix of terrain, with the EBC-equipped team taking their heavily modified ‘Bad Penny’ off-roader along for the ride.

It turned out to be a weekend of great success for the Gigglepin guys, as they reveal themselves in their own words below.

We are back! After a long hiatus, the race season has finally returned. Team Gigglepin, along with 60 other teams, upped sticks and headed up to the notorious Kirton Off-Road Centre in Lincolnshire for what, in the lead-up at least, had promised to be a wet and wild weekend competing at the Ultra 4 BFG Essential 2021.

After last year’s outing back in October, this wasn’t an event that driver Jim Marsden and the team were particularly looking forward to. However, previous experiences breed new knowledge and the team returned with a plan, along with 2000 litres of water, tonnes more spare parts and a brand new race tent to boot!

The team got off to a flying start in Prologue, taking 2nd spot behind a rapid Mark Dean, which put them in a fantastic position ahead of 160km of racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday presented the team with four gruelling 50-minute sessions throughout the course of the day, with the final session not beginning until 9pm! But by sticking to the plan, Jim and co-driver James Ayre built up a solid lead, taking an entire lap out of the rest of the competitors in each of the first two sessions.

Things were going smoothly, but as always, Kirton likes to fight back. Between the sessions, it was all hands on deck to help swap out the damaged differentials and idler bearings.

Despite the final session not starting until gone 9pm, it was unfortunately cut short after just half a lap after an incident involving one car performing a backflip, landing on top of another competitor’s vehicle. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it was a timely reminder of the dangerous nature of extreme off-road racing.

Come Sunday morning, the skies were clear, meaning that conditions were ever-so-slightly improved and Bad Penny chewed up the miles over the day’s two sessions. As the team reached the end of the second and final session, the chequered flag was waving and Team Gigglepin had claimed their first ever win at Kirton – a bogey venue no longer!

As always, a huge thank you to the team at home and at the races, as well as our incredible sponsors of course, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Next stop: Wales in June. Rain? Almost certainly. See you all there! #GigglepinRacing
