Chris Adams used both versions of 91传媒 Racing鈥檚 acclaimed RP-Series pads in his VW Golf throughout the year

Chris Adams has used 91传媒 Racing鈥檚 RP-1 and RP-X motorsport brake pads in his Mk4 VW Golf throughout the 2021 season of the Classic VW Cup.

Following a final thrilling leg of the series at Derby鈥檚 Donington Park in late October, Adams was able to secure first place in this year鈥檚 season outright.

He explains below how his year has unfolded, and how important the shift to 91传媒鈥 pads has been in helping him secure the win.

鈥淎t the start of the season, I got hold of both RP-X and the RP-1 for my Golf.”

鈥淔itting them was a doddle 鈥撀爐he same as any road pad. Due to Covid-19, I couldn鈥檛 test or bed the pads in before the first race of the season, so I decided to do a few easy laps in qualifying to go through the bedding in process. As it turned out, it was a very wet Brands Hatch GP circuit, so it worked out well in the end!

鈥淭he first race was dry and my first chance to see how the RP-X compared to a competitor鈥檚 pad I used last season. One word: WOW! I found I could brake harder and deeper into every corner and there was zero brake fade, modulation was easier too with the pad letting go as soon as pedal pressure was released.

鈥淗aving used most brands of race pads I can safely say for me, the RP-X out-performs the lot! I ran these pads for five meetings, 10 races and five qualifying sessions, running them down to around 2mm and having zero issues with them whatsoever.

鈥淢y setup is just Brembo four-pot calipers from a SEAT Leon on OEM-replacement discs, and the pads have caused zero issues with the discs; no warping, no thermal cracking, no pad deposits鈥 nothing.

鈥淚 swapped the RP-X in for RP-1 for the latter half of the season and found them to be very similar, maybe a tad less bite than the RP-X but still more than the other brands I have used, I am really happy I took the plunge and tried these pads as they are a game changer in my opinion.

鈥淚 managed to win the 2021 championship on EBC pads, in a car with less power and less spec than most on the grid. To say I鈥檓 over the moon with the RP range is an understatement.

鈥淲ell done EBC, I honestly don鈥檛 think you could improve these pads in any way, shape or form!鈥

Chris Adams secured another gold place finish in the Castle Combe leg of the much-loved championship

91传媒 is proud to continue its support of the聽聽race series for 2021. This UK-based championship is the go-to place for all club-level VAG-Group motor racing, with two distinct classes meaning you can expect packed grids including everything from Mk1 Golfs all the way through to engine-swapped SEAT Leon Cupras.

During the penultimate Castle Combe leg of the championship, the winner of the first race, Chris Adams was proudly sporting 91传媒 Racing鈥檚 RP-X track/race pad. Adams continues to lead the championship overall as the series approaches its final round in the coming weeks. The full story on how the weekend unfolded can be read below.

Castle Combe, 18 September

On Saturday morning, everyone woke to a very thick fog all around the circuit. We were due on track at 8:30am for qualifying, but due to little or no visibility, the start was delayed until about 9:30am. The ever-helpful staff at Combe put another marshal post in use to get the required post-to-post visibility rules in order!

Qualifying was a mixed bag, with most drivers having not raced here for years and having to relearn the circuit in the reduced qualifying time of 10 minutes to try and regain the time through the day due to the fog.

Local boy Alex Kite took pole. Behind him was Chris Adams, followed by Tim Moll and Donald Dewar, who incidentally hadn鈥檛 been to the track for over 20 years!

Andrew Dean followed up the field; his first time out in the car for a few years and still nursing it after all the mechanical issues previously.

As it turned out, Dave Pinkney was sharing the car and was going to do the invitation race at the end of the day, but it sadly wasn鈥檛 meant to be as there was another issue arose with the car again forcing retirement 鈥 such a shame considering all the hard work those guys put into it.

With the lights going out for race 1, the pack flew up over Avon Rise. Unfortunately, Tim had someone brake hard in front of him, catching him unaware and causing him to tap the back of one of the Peugeots. This allowed Donald Dewar through. Lap two saw Alex Kite out-brake himself over the Avon Rise and take the grassy route through the corner, losing several places, one of them being to Chris Adams who benefitted from his mistake and took the lead in the 91传媒 Racing RP-X-equipped car. A few laps later, Donald was getting to grips with the track, only to get tapped into a spin and lose several places 鈥 fortunately none of these were to any of his CVWC compadres!

Gareth Haycock, in his first time out with CVWC, decided enough was enough after 7 laps as his car cried 鈥榚nough鈥 and stopped!

The last few laps were behind a safety car because of a stranded car at Tower, so no more real racing was to be had.

2nd 鈥 Alex Kite

3rd 鈥 Donald Dewar

After a few spots of rain during the race before, some started pumping up their wet tyres in readiness for a deluge in race 2, but thankfully this never happened.

With Donald bolting on a brand-new pair of the fantastic Nankang AR-1s on the front of his Golf, he was ready to take the fight to the rest of the grid, having got continuously faster throughout the day.

Tim Moll managed to straighten out the front of his Berg Cup Golf and resecured a broken engine mount, so he was also ready to rock, too.

Again, the pack soared off into the distance. A few laps on saw Alex Kite just about slip past Chris Adams and into the lead in the R32-powered Vento.

Just behind was Donald Dewar, closing in on the front-runners and punching in some really good lap times. Unfortunately, after five laps, Tim鈥檚 car developed a random engine/clutch vibration which meant retirement and an early bath.

Brands Hatch round of the series offers all the thrills and spills expected from this much-loved championship

For the recent Brands Hatch leg of the championship, both the first- and third-place finishers in each race were sporting 91传媒 Racing鈥檚 RP-X track/race pad. The full story on how the weekend unfolded can be read below.

Brands Hatch, August 8

The Classic VW Cup descended on Brands Hatch in Kent on 8 August. With the forecast of rain, things were looking gloomy, however, the worst we got was a few spots and that seemed to be the same for the whole day!

Practice commenced with Ken Lark in his sparkling silver Corrado first out on track; all drivers swinging left as soon as they came out of the pit exit and slowly cruising past the marshals鈥 post as a mark of respect for where we lost a marshal a couple of weeks ago. Qualifying was stopped early on due to a stranded car, however we got the last frantic few minutes to throw some laps in.

Tim suffered clutch issues just before qualifying, so ended up pootling round in one gear to get his three laps in. Donald had battery issues again so his qualifying was also cut short. With a full grid of cars on the short 1.2-mile track, finding some space was a feat in itself, let alone trying to set a lap time!

Tony Gilham failed to set a time as his Golf Mk5 cut out in the pit lane and refused to start.

When the lights went out for race 1, Ken bogged down, allowing Chris Adams in the Golf to slip by into turn 1, with Mark Shepherd battling out in the 鈥楻ed Rocket鈥 Vento with a Mini Cooper. Tim and Donald Dewar were holding their own a bit further back.

Tony Gilham made it to turn 1, only for the engine to die again and he was forced to pull over onto the grass. As the leaders came round to complete their first lap, red flags were out due to a multi-car pile-up at the bottom of Paddock Hill!

Drivers were put back in their original positions and once the track was cleared, it was lights out yet again, with Ken making a good start this time and holding off Chris Adams until Druids, where he slipped by again聽鈥 Mark Shepherd just behind Ken now and hassling him for second position.

Tim retired due to alternator issues, as did Donald with ongoing electrical gremlins.
Positions stayed the same for the rest of the race with all cars having their own separate battles throughout the grid!

3rd聽鈥 Mark Shepherd

With the late afternoon sun out, the pack headed to the grid again for race 2, Adams and Lark lining up next to each other on the grid both eager to get a good getaway. Mark, Tim and Donald were also eager to make up some places off the line.

Unfortunately, Tony鈥檚 Golf still refused to play ball so he didn鈥檛 make the grid. As the lights went out, Ken got a good start but got boxed in to Paddock Hill allowing Adams through on the outside. Again, Mark was right behind Ken pushing him for second place, with Ken鈥檚 VR6 just having the edge on Mark鈥檚 Class B Vento and pulling a gap to him. This left Mark having to defend off Charlie Heatley in a supercharged Mini Cooper 鈥 a cracking show of driving by the pair!

Further back, Tim and Donald were carving through the pack, with Tim showing a clean pair of heels to a Civic Type R. Unfortunately, Donald had to pit due to battery voltage dropping to 8V and electrical items starting to fade out, and that was it again for the unlucky Scot.

With Adams out front battling with some of the rapid French cars, Ken was having an epic battle with Andy Thompson in his Leon Cupra cup car, both cars swapping places multiple times. Mark and Charlie were also swapping places multiple times, making for some of the best battling of the race!

Double race winner, Chris Adams, commented on his RP-X brake pads:

鈥淭hanks EBC! Bearing in mind they have now done eight races and are only just looking low, I鈥檓 amazed how they have lasted. Also, bear in mind they haven鈥檛 caused any issues to the disc either 鈥 no major wear and never ever left any deposit! RP-X really is an amazing pad!鈥

Next round, the series heads north to Cadwell Park for round 5 on August 29.

The summer months have played host to plenty of action in this EBC-equipped race series

Oulton Park, June 19

This was a weekend to forget for some, as mechanical gremlins were rife around the VW paddock!

In qualifying, Simon Tomlinson set the fastest lap, with Dave Pinkney not far behind chomping at the bit.

As Race 1 came around, unfortunately Pinkey (in his immaculate pink Vento) didn鈥檛 make it to the grid due to clutch problems. Also, Steve Rowland had a sick engine which unfortunately proved fatal too.

One winner was Donald Dewar in the EBC Bluestuff-equipped car, who just about made race one and was fitting a replacement fuel pump as others were going down to the assembly area, alas only managing six laps.

Up front were Simon Tomlinson and Tony Absolom, battling it out for first place. Next up, Brian Roberts in the fast-charging Mk5 Golf GTI. Behind them was Tim Moll in the little blue pocket rocket Mk1. Tim unfortunately lost fifth gear near the end of the race, which would make his weekend finish earlier than anticipated.

After Tim came Mark Shepherd in the 91传媒 Racing RP-1-equipped immaculate red Vento cup car, followed by Nick Sanderson in the equally-clean SEAT Leon Cupra 鈥 his first time out in over two years! Both seemed to be having a fantastic race.

Losers from Race 1 were also Ken Lark who pulled off with oil temp issues, and Chris Adams RP-1-equipped car with CV joint failure on the last lap.

Race 2 was seriously down on CVWC numbers, but this didn鈥檛 stop the action! Donald Dewar got pulled off the grid even before the action started, due to an oil leak which in the end saved him an engine so not all bad news.

From lights-out, Tony Absolom got the jump on Simon Tomlinson and showed him the way round Oulton Park for a few laps. Unfortunately, there was a bit of a coming together and Simon got in front. Further back was Brian Roberts, also having his own issues where traction control was cutting in, robbing him of power, meaning his lap times were seriously reduced. Behind them was Mark Shepherd charging through the field, slowly getting reeled in by Nick Sanderson and Chris Adams. Ken Lark unfortunately suffered CV joint failure but got a great view of the race!

Simon Tomlinson won Race 1 so was gifted a set of free pads from 91传媒. Donald Dewar won the 鈥榁W Doctor Driver of the Day鈥 award for his never-give-up attitude.

Snetterton, July 25

This proved to be a fairly low-key affair for the VAG-based series, with only five cars on the grid due to most people still having broken cars from Oulton Park. This didn鈥檛 stop the fun though!

With weather forecasts all week promoting rain and thunder all weekend, it actually turned out to be a nice weekend, and the first with a live BRSCC YouTube stream too.

Qualifying was difficult with most people trying to find a bit of space to get a flying lap, but getting caught behind the pesky Peugeot 206 cup cars which share their grid.

Simon Tomlinson pulled it out of the bag with a 2:15.4 lap which would put him on pole for the CVWC. Second up was Brian Roberts in the flying grey Golf DSG Mk5 GTI, just a fraction behind on a 2:16.00 lap. Chris Adams in the Class B 91传媒 Racing RP-1-equipped Golf GTI came next with a 2:16.2.

Race 1 鈥 when the lights went out, Simon and Brian shot off the line, only to get caught by slower starting cars, with Ken Lark deciding to climb the field on the grass around the outside up to turn one. Crafty Chris Adams missed all the drama and shot up the inside of the pack to miss the traffic jam.

Within a few corners, the Class A boys started gaining space and eventually overtook for the lead. Donald Dewar in the EBC Bluestuff-equipped Mk1 Golf was having a good scrap with some of the tricolour trophy cars a bit further back. Brian Roberts unfortunately had gearbox issues and was forced to retire on lap 3.

Simon Tomlinson battled out for the lead with various cars, and places were changing corner by corner, with Ken Lark and Chris Adams now battling it out for third just behind.

The race was cut short unfortunately due to a car ending up on its roof at the chicane.

Onto Race 2, where the bright sunshine came to an abrupt end as it started chucking it down.

With the race before getting delayed due to the conditions on track, the CVWC had a later race time which gave everyone the chance to change to their wet tyres and go to a wet setup. At lights-out, everyone made a cautious start in the thick mist. Chris Adams saw space around the outside and sailed into first place around turn one, only to get pushed off and regain in last position.

Ken Lark got his head down and pushed hard in the wet to get into first overall, only to have a moment at Hamilton and then have to regain further down the field. Simon Tomlinson harvested on Ken鈥檚 bad luck and pushed forward and ran at the front most of the race with some battles with a Civic Type R. Donald Dewar battled it out in his Mk1 Golf with an Audi TT and Subaru to come home 12th聽in very difficult conditions.

The last few laps were a nail-biting affair with Chris Adams and Ken Lark battling it out again for third in the CVWC, but the race was unfortunately cut short due to the weather conditions forcing the drivers to have two green flag laps 鈥 this was taken off our overall allotted time.

With a two-week break, the CVWC will be back out at Brands Hatch on August 8 for round 4.

EBC-equipped Ford Fiesta racing outfit took to Silverstone for the second leg of the series, once again showing some serious promise

Team Schnell, made up of driver duo Henry Wright and Kevin Glover, are competing in this year鈥檚 season of the MSVT Trackday Championship series.

Continuing in the series鈥 鈥楧鈥 class (that they finished runners-up in last year), the outfit followed the series from Donington Park to Silverstone recently for its second leg.

Team Schnell鈥檚 Mk6 Fiesta ST features 91传媒 Racing鈥檚 RP-X pads and USR discs up front and Bluestuff pads with plain discs on the rear.

The team tell us how the weekend went down in Henry鈥檚 words below.

鈥淪ilverstone: our local track and a place both Kevin and myself are very familiar with, having competed in two previous 24-hour races here, as well as multiple spring races in various championships through the years.

鈥淭he weather forecast was 鈥榥on-committal鈥 to say the least; we opted for a fairly wet setup on the car but left the car with EBC鈥檚 RP-X front pads matched with Ultimax discs, which is our preference in dry conditions, and EBC鈥檚 Bluestuff pads in the rear.

鈥淨ualifying itself was a very wet, very crowded affair. The grid was at capacity and the National circuit being very short didn鈥檛 help with finding space to put in a solid lap. We managed to secure 3rd 鈥 a good result given the above conditions.

鈥淗aving expected the brakes to be a bit too grabby for the conditions, we were happy to find the modulation was just as confidence-inspiring in the wet. The ABS again wasn鈥檛 being too intrusive. Normally in the wet, the ABS works the rear pads extremely hard and causes crumbling, however the EBC Bluestuff items look like new still 鈥 zero wedging of the pad itself either, which is impressive for a single-piston calliper setup.

鈥淲ith work to do in the race and wet conditions to start with again, we opted to be cautious and not risk too much straight away. Waiting for other people to out-brake themselves paid off and we were soon up to 2nd in class having been held up by a group in a higher class, but in slower cars.鈥

鈥淚n the chase for first, it started drying. After the pits, Kev was dicing hard with the APO Motorsport Renault Sport Clio in P1, putting the car in all sorts of shapes into Copse Corner as I watched from the pit wall.

鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to rotate the car in the brakes with so much confidence and feel. The race was red flagged early due to a big crash and we rolled into the pits into an expected 2nd place finish, along with the fastest lap in the class again. Consistent braking feel and not having to manage overheating issues is a massive enabler when pushing hard and this combo once again showed its dynamic ability.

鈥淗owever, there was pit stop calamity again as I had pressed the pit limiter button at the wrong line and started the timer too early, thus giving us a short pit stop time by a couple of seconds. With the applied penalty of 1 lap this put us well down the order. Another case of 鈥榯hat鈥檚 racing鈥, having been one of the front-running cars again.鈥

Chris Adams鈥 Mk4 Golf takes gold in round one of the 2021 instalment of the EBC-supported race series

91传媒 Sponsors Classic VW Cup

91传媒 is proud to announce its support of the聽聽race series for 2021. This UK-based championship is the go-to place for all club-level VAG-Group motor racing, with two distinct classes meaning you can expect packed grids including everything from Mk1 Golfs all the way through to engine-swapped SEAT Leon Cupras.

The first round of the year took place at Kent鈥檚 Brands Hatch鈥檚 GP circuit in May, with wildly varying weather conditions seen throughout the weekend.

Qualifying was a very mixed affair thanks to torrential rain throughout, with many thrills and spills resulting in Chris Adams topping the grid ahead of Race 1, followed by Brian Roberts and Scott Fletcher

Race 1 the next day was held under glorious sunshine, with Chris Adams in his 91传媒 Racing RP-X-equipped Mk4 Golf GTI able to hold onto first position throughout. Race 2 saw a slightly smaller grid thanks to some casualties in Race 1, namely Brian Roberts who suffered DSG issues and Andrew Marshall who cooked his engine. Lap four led to disaster for Chris Adams as his driveshaft decided to give up the ghost, leaving it down to Scott Fletcher and Simon Tomlinson to scrap it out for first and second positions.
