Adam Walker attends regular track days in his heavily modified Clio 172

Keen track day attendee, Adam Walker, has been running his modified Renaultsport Clio 172 at race tracks across the country in recent years, with the car also road registered for the occasional fun weekend blast.

Recently in need of brake disc and pad upgrades all-round, Adam approached 91´ŤĂ˝ to see what a suitable setup would be for this capable-yet-road-legal package.

He eventually decided to try EBC’s Bluestuff pads – a capable occasional track/club racing pad that’s now also R90 approved for road use in most territories – as well as grooved USR discs.

Following the installation of these components, it was straight to Wiltshire’s Castle Combe Circuit for a shakedown track day – a gruelling circuit on brakes which would be a great test for these new products.

With varying weather conditions throughout the day, Adam commented on the Bluestuff pad’s impressive performance. You can read his thoughts in his own words below.

“I have been running what you might class as a ‘rival’ to the Bluestuff pad for many years on my Clio, so was unsure if the EBC components would offer me any extra braking performance.

“Following a fast bed-in process, it didn’t take me long to realise that Bluestuff are indeed the next level up when it comes to on-track bite and fade resistance. I was able to stay out for more laps than I have done previously, which is particularly impressive considering how demanding Combe is as a circuit.

“The fact the pads are road legal is just the icing on the cake, allowing me to take the Clio out at weekends for fun drives with my daughters.”

Ohio-based racing outfit was impressed with the results from the upcoming SR-Series sintered pad range

For the past 12 months, 91´ŤĂ˝ Racing has worked closely with the Alliance Autosport racing outfit based in Columbus, Ohio (USA), to validate the upcoming SR-Series sintered race pad range in some of the most brutal Sports Car Club of America [SCCA] club racing around.

Scott Rettich, driver and owner of Alliance Autosport has a diverse background in racing, ranging from karting, spec racer Fords Formula Enterprise, GT classes and more. With loads of championships and lap records to his name, he decided to start a race outfit that goes as far as renting out and setting up vehicles for customers to compete right alongside of him.

While overall happy with the brake pads he had been running in the past, he decided he would give the SR range a shot to see what it had to offer. Scott decided to try out the SR-21 pads on their 500HP SCCA GT2 car at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio since the high torque offering is a perfect fit for unassisted vehicles. A simple shakedown with their baseline pads and a pad swap later, he was doing full-pace laps with no bedding in required!

Immediately, he noted the lower pedal effort required to slow the Camaro down, reporting that it took around 40% less input to get the same amount of deceleration as the competitor pad. This was a huge plus for Scott as 30-minute races can become quite taxing when you have to stand on the pedal every corner. No fade was detected and it was described as better than what he had run in the past with pedal feel being very communicative.

Scott went on to run the very same set of pads for multiple race weekends, with wins at various race tracks, even outpacing the GT1 cars. After removing the pads for inspection at seasons end, they had plenty of laps left in them with no signs of letting up. Although not even close to being a concern here, another benefit of SR pads is that there isn’t any glue or nasty adhesives that will start interfering with braking power towards the end of the pad’s life due to the unique pad bonding process of SR.

After these very positive results, 91´ŤĂ˝ Racing has become the SCCA GT2 brake pad supplier for Alliance Autosport and we look forward to helping them rack up even more wins and championships.

Upcoming SR-Series sintered race pads were tested on Audi R8 race car, with extremely positive results

The US-based McCann Racing team had been battling with brake issues that were causing some nasty vehicle behaviours.

All year, they said they have been attempting to correct a brake-induced snap oversteer situation during trail braking and inconsistent ABS activation but couldn’t find a brake pad with acceptable characteristics… until they tried 91´ŤĂ˝ Racing’s all-new SR-Series sintered race pads, that is.

McCann Racing decided to try the SR-Series pads on their Audi R8 LMS GT4 race car that competes in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (in the GS class), with hopes for a cure. The venue chosen for testing was the ‘Virginia is for Racing Lovers’ event at Virginia International Raceway, amidst a wet race weekend. No changes were made to the vehicle besides popping in a full set of SR pads.

After running the full one-hour practice session with SR-21 in the front and SR-11 in the rear, there were nothing but good things to be reported. The drivers felt there was more braking torque and initial bite available, but still the brakes offered excellent modulation.

More importantly, SR had solved their snap oversteer issue through excellent pad release. Not only was the release issue resolved, but they could now activate ABS and stay in it which resulted in a much more settled and predictable car. Rotor temperatures appeared to peak up to 800°C over the course of the practice session, but the pads took it in their stride, with less than 0.5mm of wear.

Take it from the drivers themselves: “It was the best the car has ever felt”

91´ŤĂ˝ Racing looks forward to working with Team McCann Racing in their next season as we continue to support them and their efforts.

They used to say that a brake pad that boasted good street manners could never be a true race pad, but 91´ŤĂ˝ has proven that this theory no longer holds up.

Take the firm’s latest formula, for instance, which excels on both the road and the circuit. Bluestuff is an organic trackpad that offers a medium lifetime in race use, beds-in fast and is good to 500°C (900°F) plus. Arguably the best bit about it, however, is the fact it can be installed at home, driven to the track and then driven home again, too.

Below we describe the popular EBC race compounds but you can choose exactly what you need from our pad selector,

On the pad selector tool, you will find all sorts of useful info such as how to bed your brakes in, the Track Pack we offer which is essential for any serious track driving to assess temperatures you are experiencing, etc.

On each race formulation, there is a spider diagram showing the characteristics of each material to help you further refine what you need

Drivers are always recommended to check wear carefully before returning from a race event, and note that this is NOT an endurance-grade race pad, so the life is somewhat less than a full track-only pad.

Other brake pads in the 91´ŤĂ˝ range that offer much longer life include:

(most numbers now in stock – )

If you intend to visit a race track, you should think about getting an 91´ŤĂ˝ Track Pack, which contains a range of useful items that will help you monitor your vehicle’s brakes, such as race brake fluid and rotor heat test paints.

High-performance driver education and lapping (or track days in the UK) are tough on brakes. If you’re driving a full street vehicle with a full interior and spare wheel etc, all that weight loads up your brakes and they are prone to getting hot fast.

If they get TOO hot, you may need to remove and replace caliper seals or opt for a brake pad that can withstand a higher heat range.

Follow the 91´ŤĂ˝ break-in guidelines (which can be viewed ).

There is a wealth of other useful information about fast street/racing brakes on our website. Simply and hit the Search button.

We’ve undertaken an epic project that will see us develop one of the most formidable Fiesta STs in the country

Now it’s reaching its final stages, we’ve decided to look back at how our ‘Ultimate Fiesta Build’ project has unfolded over the last few months by bringing you our build articles that were originally featured in Fast Ford magazine. This week, it’s Part 13, where we head back to our friends at  for the installation of a  roll cage.

Remember: you can now sign up to WIN the car in a charity raffle competition, with all proceeds going to the Rays of Sunshine children’s charity.  to enter.

Ultimate Fiesta So Far

With our Mk7 ST ‘Ultimate Fiesta Build’ now becoming so impressive it’s able to topple fully-fledged supercars on track (), this month we wanted to ensure that its safety aspects were equally-as-competent for the lucky person who eventually wins the car in our charity giveaway soon.

It’s why we decided to approach our friends at  and snap up one of the firm’s 4-point bolt-in roll cages to help keep the internal cabin area as safe as possible in any situation.

Just like 91´ŤĂ˝, Somerset-based Caged Laser is one of those proudly British engineering firms that are all too uncommon nowadays. Supplying bespoke motorsport solutions for a huge range of applications, everything that Caged Laser does is proudly designed, built and finished in house.

The ‘cage we opted for is a ‘rear’ item that starts just behind the driver and passenger’s heads and works its way back into the boot area. Made out of sturdy PTG700 tubing, it’s handily supplied with weld-in mounting boxes which the ‘cage then conveniently bolts into.

To make sure the install was done correctly, we headed back over to our friends at , where technician James got to work getting the shiny red unit in place.

The first job is fully removing the rear seats and carpet, before stripping all fixtures, fittings and adhesive from the white metal underneath. The curtain airbags above each door of the Fiesta also carefully needed removing, as well as some of the headlining to accommodate the satisfyingly snug fit of the ‘cage.

Once the mounting boxes were welded in, Caged Laser made the rest of the process hassle-free with its skillfully designed product that just required some bolting to ensure a secure fit inside the car.

Looking fantastic in its complimentary red hue, the interior was finally freshened up by re-adding some of the carpet and headlining to give it the ultimate ‘clubsport’ fast road/track look. We can now rest assured that the Fiesta is up for the job of keeping its passengers safe, regardless of what we throw at it. Oh, and the handling has probably been improved slightly, to boot. Winner!

As we arrived back at EBC HQ and just before going to press with this update, we received a package from our friends at  – a set of 7.5×17” Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 alloys, finished in a stunning gloss black colour! These will eventually get a set of dedicated track day semi-slick tyres on them and act as a second set of wheels for the winner of the car. Stay tuned to see what the look like mounted in place…

Ultimate Fiesta So Far

During a routine scroll through the web recently, we stumbled upon a rather eye-opening list that displayed the most stolen vehicles in the UK throughout 2020.

Guess what was right at the top spot? Yep – the humble Ford Fiesta! This worried us here at EBC HQ, as our Mk7 ST ‘Ultimate Fiesta Build’ is undoubtedly a particularly desirable example of this much-loved hatchback, making us feel even more exposed to the potential dangers lurking out there.

There was only one thing for it: to head to one of the UK’s most respected alarm specialists –  – to make our Fezza as secure as Fort Knox in case of any unwanted attention in the future.

With premises in Birmingham, London and Manchester, Pandora is pushing the envelope of what’s possible with car alarm systems right now. Often catering for the most exotic supercars on the planet (including some of Shmee150’s machines), we knew we’d be in safe hands.

Arriving at the firm’s impressive Redditch HQ, we were greeted by Sales Manager Matt, who talked us through what the team thought would be the best solution for our particular needs – .

The Light Pro V2 system is both an alarm and immobiliser unit, offering not only immobilisation but also an array of sensors (including shock, motion, tilt and internal) to protect our Ford from a huge number of circumstances. It also boasts an anti-hijack feature which is designed to keep you safe during any incidents of carjacking. Pretty cool!

We teamed this up with the Nav-X tracking upgrade that unlocks a raft of features and controls that can be accessed from your phone wherever you are in the world. This means we could arm our Fiesta if we happened to be on holiday in Australia, even if the car is already in motion.

As well as a turbo timer function which will prove incredibly useful for us, this piece of kit also lets you start and stop the engine of your car from anywhere in the world – great if you’re on a long trip away and want to keep the engine in tip-top condition by giving it a quick run once in a while.

There’s no way we could physically find room to tell you about all the amazing features this system offers, so it’s well worth heading over to Pandora’s website for full details.

Although we’re not allowed to give away too much about the full installation process, one thing that did amaze us was just how small the whole system was – the alarm unit being not much bigger than a credit card. Matt proudly tells us it’s arguably the most advanced off-the-shelf alarm system you can buy right now.

Now it’s all installed, we need to spend a couple of evenings playing around and getting to grips with just what we can now do with all this amazing new kit. We’ll see you next time…

Remember: you can now sign up to WIN the car in a charity raffle competition, with all proceeds going to the Rays of Sunshine children’s charity.  to enter.

Ultimate Fiesta So Far

The last few months have mainly been filled with us having our heads stuck under our ‘Ultimate Fiesta Build’ charity giveaway project, attempting to make it the very best Mk7 ST around.

We think it’s safe to say that we’re getting there with our goal – the car now boasting just shy of 400bhp and featuring a raft of chassis, braking and safety upgrades to ensure it’s an all-round hoot to pilot!

Because of this, we thought it was about time we treated ourselves to some more track action in the hot hatch – giving us a valuable chance to see how all the hard work translates when the car is driven hard out on the circuit.

It’s why you could find us recently returning to Wiltshire’s , this time with some familiar faces and other high-performance machinery to pit the Fezza against.

The first job was to give the car a bit of a shakedown on the rain-soaked 1.85-mile race track. It was great to instantly feel how much faster, tauter and more downright capable the pocket rocket felt – undoubtedly infinitely faster than when we brought it to this circuit in near-stock form, whilst retaining the handling and stopping capabilities to match.

Next up, Ford YouTuber  was invited out on track with his  Stage 2-modified ST. Also rocking an , Steve had the time of his life battling against our tamed BTCC racing driver, Jake Hill, who was behind the wheel of our Fiesta and showing Steve some on-track tricks and tips. Jake commented on how the  in our car was a particularly strong point in helping put the power down, especially in the treacherous conditions we faced.

After this, it was time for the big one: putting our Ford up against our R35 Nissan GT-R development vehicle. With Jake Hill once again in the Fiesta and our in-house test driver piloting the Japanese super-coupe, this would promise to be an extremely interesting set of battles indeed.

The first test was a simple 0-60mph sprint on the damp Tarmac. Unsurprisingly, the 550bhp GT-R’s trick 4WD system meant it performed the launch in just 4.4 seconds, with our FWD manual Fezza taking 6.2 seconds to achieve the same speed.

A 60-0mph brake test followed. This time, the Fiesta’s lighter weight and big brake kit came into their own, with a 66ft stopping distance compared to the bulkier GT-R’s 88ft.

Finally, it was what we’d all been waiting for – a handful of hot laps of the circuit. With the Fiesta taking an early lead and the GT-R hot on its tails throughout, it incredibly managed to retain this position throughout the race, illustrating just how much the modifications we’ve added to the car have transformed it.

As the sun began to set, we were greeted by one last contender – a full-blown BRSCC Fiesta Championship race car, which went out in the hands of local driver Adam Higgins against Jake Hill in our car. It was fascinating to see how a heavily modified road car fared against a full-blown race car on race tyres and you can see the outcome of this battle by heading to Ěý˛Ô´ÇˇÉ…
