Austin Phipps uses Bluestuff pads and GD Sport Rotos on his V8-powered saloon

Arizona-based Austin Phipps of the Mulletsport race team is a professional drifter, currently using a modified 2012 Audi S4 with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive conversion in various drift series across the USA.

We previously caught up with Phipps and the team as they undertook a successful FuelFest event at the back end of 2025 – upgrading to a new engine and EBC’s Bluestuff brake pads in preparation. Alongside the capable pads, Phipps continues to opt for EBC’s GD Sport Rotors, too.

We’ve since caught up with the Mulletsport outfit off the back of their attendance at Round 1 of the Southern Californian HOTPIT Autofest show – a weekend that threw up many challenges and proved to be a big learning curve for the team.

Read how it panned out in Austin’s own words below…

“We thought we caught a lucky break when Flavor Express announced an open drift night at the same venue as Round 1. We left a day early to get some much-needed shakedown laps on the new Icon Pistons motor. Good thing we did…

“After the first lap, we started chasing a crank sensor issue, and the entire night only produced three good laps before we snapped an axle on the gnarly transition off the bank.

“Friday was setup day. We replaced the axle, passed tech, and finished our series photos. Before calling it good, we decided to pull the valve covers and inspect the new aluminum rocker arms. Again, glad we did: four of them had stripped out, sending the rollers somewhere into the motor.

“Thankfully, Brad from German Elite Tuning hadn’t left Arizona for the weekend yet. Even better, we still had our old stainless steel rockers in the engine room. The problem now was finding the missing parts.

“So, we went fishing with a magnet. Starting in the heads and eventually working our way down to the oil pan, we managed to find three solid rollers and the shrapnel from the fourth. We slapped every magnet we could find onto the oil pan and crossed our fingers.

“Brad left at 2AM Saturday morning to make it to Orange Speedway by 7AM. I was in my suit for the driver’s meeting at 8AM while Rich, Andy, Jettlee, and Brad immediately got to work. They replaced the rocker arms, adjusted everything, and filled the motor with fresh Liqui Moly oil.

“We lost about 30 minutes of the first practice hour and only managed one run in Session 1.”

“The first run was conservative. The second… not so much. An overly aggressive entry led to a rough introduction with the wall on the bank.

“Luckily, we had an hour break before the next two-hour practice session. The team tore apart the damaged rear end and zip-tied the car back together just to get me back out there.

“After watching the other drivers run, I made some changes: lower tire pressure, dumped the shocks, and cranked up the boost. Next lap, I felt comfortable in the car. Practice turned into a learning session—timing, references, and figuring out the line. I struggled to put together a clean lap, but I still felt confident going into qualifying with a conservative approach.

“Fresh tires warmed up. Time to go. Starting in second gear proved to be the fastest run-up to the bank during practice. I launched the car, rolled into full throttle, shifted into third—POP. Already committed to the entry, I grabbed a quick handbrake to angle the car into OZ1. That sucked the car straight into the wall. Hit one.

“With zero boost, I stood on the throttle expecting the car to drive away from the wall. Instead, it floated hard back into it—breaking a wheel and rear knuckle. What I didn’t realize at the time—and live on YouTube—I attempted to salvage the run.

“Embarrassed and frustrated, I parked the car in the pits, assuming our weekend was over. That thought apparently never crossed my team’s minds. They ripped off the damaged ECS Tuning wheel and disassembled the right rear suspension down to the subframe. Turns out a bushing took the brunt of the impact and simply ejected itself. Amazingly, the EBC brakes were one of the only things completely undamaged.

“With some Liqui Moly high-strength thread locker, a lot of hammering, clamps, and zip ties… We had a car again.

“Qualifying wrapped up with several cars not making the show. Unfortunately, we ended up 31st qualifier in a 31-car field.

“My mindset completely reset during the autograph session. The fans were beyond excited to meet the drivers of these crazy cars. They didn’t care about the qualifying order—they were just pumped to be there.”

“I carried that energy straight into Top 32. Facing the #3 qualifier, I knew it was time to step up. Fresh tires, my normal warm-up routine, and I pulled to the line.

“Immediately, something felt off. The tires unloaded and I watched the lead driver pull away. Calm and collected, I stayed behind him, knowing I could close the gap on the bank.

“I eased into the entry, set the car, and rolled into the throttle to catch up. Then the car snapped around like I’d hit a banana in Mario Kart. The weight of the entire weekend hitting me all at once, I failed.

“My wife and spotter Hailz came over the radio: “Just focus on this lap. You got this. Just drive.” That’s when it clicked. The temperature had dropped massively and the tires simply weren’t warm enough. At this level of competition, everything matters. With a turbo V8 powerplant, fixing that was easy. I stood on the throttle and did a rolling burnout back to the line.

“Pulling to the line in the lead run, everything went quiet. Just another lap. A light flick into OZ1, let the car settle, then hammer down. This time, the car hooked up perfectly and I was along for the ride. Flat-footed, the car followed every input and I laid down our best run of the weekend.

“When I pulled off track, it hit me: this was Round 1 of many to come. I gave everyone on the team a big hug and thanked them individually and as a group. We learned a ton!

“I may have years of drifting experience and a few seasons in FD, but this was the first professional-level competition event for everyone on my team. They won the weekend.

“I’m incredibly excited for Round 2. No major changes planned—just repairs, prep, and getting ready for the next competition. We have slush coming up next weekend and a few local events to get my driving polished up and ready for a strong showing at round 2.”

Ahead of the mighty FuelFest 2025 event, Phipps decided to finally get to the bottom of the engine issues that had been haunting him throughout the year by replacing the entire powerplant with a boosted LS V8 motor.

With more power than ever on tap, he also upgraded his EBC Yellowstuff brake pads to Bluestuff components, retaining his GD Sport Rotors in the process. This setup aims to maximise his current brake system, before he takes the plunge to a big brake kit.

You can read how the event went in his own words below…

“What an event; a huge crowd and tonnes of laps. The car worked amazingly well! I have no complaints. I am so confident going into comp season. Set up out of the box is so close to perfect. I am blown away.

“2025 hasn’t been the season we planned. Going through four motors starting this year, I made the decision to go back to the proven American LS V8 powerplant. This time I went the direction with the most bang for your buck: a turbocharged, aluminium 5.3-litre Gen 4 LS. I went with the aluminium motor to save 100lbs of weight on the front of the car over the iron block. Keeping weight in mind, I mounted the turbo in the trunk area of the car. With no intercooler and currently on 6psi of boost during testing, I was wildly impressed on the response and temperatures of the new powerplant.”

“Everything was on-track to have a fully prepared event. 91´ŤĂ˝ sent us out a care package of EBC swag. The trailer was packed up. Just one last nut and bolt check and fluids change before race day. Thursday night, we found excessive metal in the oil filter, causing the team at Haus of Euro to dive into the engine 48 hours before Fuel Fest Phoenix 2025. We found the new triple-disc clutch was being overextended by the slave, resulting on premature wear to the thrust bearing in the engine. We sourced parts for delivery on Friday morning. The team reassembled the engine and was buttoned up on Friday afternoon.

“We loaded up Friday night and headed straight to the track Saturday morning. Unloaded the car and set up our hot pit for ride-alongs. The plan was a few light laps. After the year I have had, my ambitions of driving got the better of me. Full send lap 1. Car was dialled in and planted. Logs on the motor looked spot on. So, we started taking passengers in lap 2! The track layout was a fast entry, into a tight transition, flowing into a straight with a Manji right before a long wall ride in front of the crowd. With the new turbocharged V8, lighting up the tyres is no longer a problem. Slowing the car down is now more needed than ever!”

“Still on stock A4-sized brakes all around to keep the weight as low as possible on the S4, along with a non-booster braking system, the pad and rotor combination is hyper-critical on placing the car on the right line. Transitioning on the throttle, headed right at a concrete wall in front of 5000+ people, I had all the confidence to stand on the throttle and rest my left foot on the brake pedal. Slowing down the front of the car precisely to ride the wall and keep the rear tyres smokin’.

“I love my Bluestuff pads! Complete confidence in the bite of the brakes throughout the run.

“Sadly, we had an oil cooler failure late in the night, causing us to retire the car. We repaired the car and loaded it back in the trailer. Bright and early, we were back on the road headed to FCP Euro in Mesa, AZ, for their morning motoring meet. Featured in the Liqui Moly booth, we received a wild response to the car from the euro community, a lot of head scratching followed by the biggest of surprises when following the charge piping through the car into the trunk, revealing the massive turbo. What a weekend!”

Austin Phipps has a duo of Yellowstuff-adorned Audi drift vehicles

Arizona-based Austin Phipps of the Mulletsport race team is a professional drifter, currently using a modified 2012 Audi S4 with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive conversion in various drift series across the USA.

In his S4, Phipps uses 91´ŤĂ˝â€™ Yellowstuff pads on all four corners of his drift car, as well as GD Sport Rotors all-round.

Following recent success at the Modded Kulture competition, Phipps used the remainder of the season to focus on his side-project: his Audi A4 ‘drift taxi’ demo car, that offers up three passenger seats for hilarious passenger rides at various events.

Featuring only bolt-on upgrades, this car also runs the same braking setup as Phipps’ S4.

You can read his final thoughts on the year, including his first experiences with his drift taxi, in his own words below…

“I would like to first thank everyone for an amazing 2024 season. Without all of your support, this year simply wouldn’t have happened.

“This year started off with very unknown expectations, as the 3.0T was in the car but not working correctly. Suspension changes and shocks untested. When I felt I was coming off a letdown in late 2023, I wasn’t expecting to keep some of my support. When EBC stepped up very early this year, everything changed.

“Bringing FCP on board allowed me to build a dream demo car: a car featuring only bolt-on parts, highlighting it doesn’t take much to drift an Audi.”

“Taking three passengers per lap is an absolute joy. Seeing groups or friends and couples experiencing drifting for the first time together makes all the late nights worth it.

“I am so proud of my program. 2025 the plan is to drive the yellow demo car a lot! Make every event I can. The S4 will finally transition to a full competition-only car. I will be taking a lot of weight out of the S4 in the off-season. I’m chancing a championship series in California with eyes on Hotpit in 2026.

“Thank you everyone for your overwhelming support this season. Let’s make 2025 the break-out year for the program!”

Austin Phipps showed promise in his Yellowstuff-adorned Audi S4

Arizona-based Austin Phipps of the Mulletsport race team is a professional drifter, currently using a modified 2012 Audi S4 with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive conversion in various drift series across the USA.

Phipps uses 91´ŤĂ˝â€™ Yellowstuff pads on all four corners of his drift car, as well as GD Sport Rotors all-round.

We caught up with Phipps following the latest drift competition/show in his home state of Arizona, where he had another successful weekend. Read how it all panned out in his own words below.

“So we had a comp last weekend. The car did a-freakin-mazing! I drove way too hard for the style/level of competition. Had the car hooked up and qualified 1st. I didn’t know what car I was battling until before warming up the tires. So, I overall loosened up the car to chase anyone. Facing an SR20 S13 and Miata, I just overdrive (I don’t like leaving a gap on anyone) and chased too close to them for the speed of their cars vs mine. S13 parked the car in the last corner, transmission at the wall and forced me to make contact in the right front. Broke a tie rod, ending my night.”

“I definitely learned a lot about my program. My team killed it by changing tires and keeping the car fuelled up. I need to work on better spotting and get me out of my head. We were prepared and determined. Little tweaks and we will be ready for the podium. Really a testament to the partners I am working with. We are coming out of the gate swinging like a professional team.

“I am going to keep chasing the podium and prepare the car for some fun events to end out the year.”

Austin Phipps enjoyed displaying his skills in his Yellowstuff-adorned Audi S4

Austin Phipps of the Mulletsport race team is a professional drifter, currently using a modified 2012 Audi S4 with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive conversion in various drift series across the USA.

Phipps uses 91´ŤĂ˝â€™ Yellowstuff pads on all four corners of his drift car, as well as GD Sport Rotors all-round.

We recently last up with Phipps after he attended the busy over the summer, and he’s just carried out his last event of the year in the form of FuelFest held in early December at Wildhorse Motorsports Park, Arizona.

Phipps tells us how the weekend went down, as well as his plans over the winter off-season, in his own words below.

“Thank you to 91´ŤĂ˝ for the support in 2022!

“I tested out an Audi A4 differential at the FuelFest weekend with a different gear ratio. That ended up cutting our night short as the snub failed midday.

“Replacement axles are on the way for the S4 differential. I plan on testing one more time this month before tearing the car down for an off-season refresh. The four-seat cage is scheduled to be installed and I am going to start making some custom parts to help take the car to the next level for competitions next year.

“I will be building an engine and transmission for my tow vehicle this off-season also, in preparation for travelling next year. My plan is to also build a seat time/rental car next year as a side project.

“Thank you again for your support this season, I’m looking forward to 2023!”

Austin Phipps flourished at the competitive drift event held at the scenic Pikes Peak International Raceway

He recently headed to Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado Springs, where he competed in the incredibly popular Gridlife Alpine Horizon event.

Phipps was once again impressed with his braking setup’s on-track performance, as well as its versatile ability to act as the perfect street setup, too, as he explains in his own words below.

“I had written off this event as the build of my car wasn’t progressing quick enough. When my amazingly supportive team pushed me to make the event last minute, though, we got to work.

“In 1.5 weeks, the car was completely stripped apart. We tore the engine down to the block and heads. Everything was replaced: injectors, pullies, water pump, thermostat, supercharger. We knew if we were going to go, we had to represent well!

“While the supercharger was off, we sent it out to a local shop – Vast Perfromance AZ – to have it ported, upgrading the fuel pump to keep up with E85 fuel, too. We stripped the AC out of the car and completely re-did the cooling system, building a custom three-pump water-to-air intercooler system. The interior was also completely removed and a Sparco race seat was installed.

“JXB supplied us with an upgraded shifter while we were in there. Working with Yellow Speed Racing, we installed three-way coilovers on the car. It came down to the wire wrapping up the car. We even changed the oil on the trailer just before leaving – not the way I like to prepare for an event! The support behind me and knowing I could bring it all together was the energy we were running on.

“We made the 14-hour drive to Colorado. First in line, we were first to set up our pit. We unloaded the car and passed tech with no issues. We cracked open a cold one and relaxed for the first time in almost two weeks. All the late nights and rushing around was about to pay off. Of course, relaxing didn’t last long when I knew there was always something to do. So we got to work again installing underglow on the car knowing four sessions out of the weekend were at night.”

“On Friday morning we warmed up the car and went out for the first session. This was the first time driving a completely new car. We took over 400lbs out of the car, Added 80hp, went from a 245-profile tyre to a 265-profile, and added completely new coilovers. Yeah it wasn’t a great session… the car wasn’t reacting correctly and lacked side bite.

“Throughout the day we made changes. Every change was noticeable. This new chassis is completely different from my B5 S4 drift car; way more forward drive, and the steering is light and crisp. Power delivery is crazy linear. Late Friday during the last session, the clutch pedal started getting sticky. We were so stoked to have the car out ripping laps with no issues we ended the day. Waking up Saturday, we had a team meeting. My team decided it was worth missing some morning laps knowing rain was coming, throwing another curveball at us for setup of the car to swap the clutch. My plan was to install an upgraded clutch before the event, but we just ran out of time. So we threw the car up on jack stands and dropped the transmission. After replacing the clutch and a quick trip around the paddock. We were back on track. We dropped tyre pressure and made a shock change to really hook up the car. It really came around – hitting over 80mph on entry, the car was working well!

“We drove Friday to Sunday with no major issues. I was exhausted, but this was just the beginning! We loaded up the car and headed for Formula Drift Utah for round seven of the season. While building and driving my Audi S4 drift car. I am also the crew chief for Michael Essa’s Pro BMW M3. Rolling into FD on Wednesday, I unloaded the car off the trailer for display in the Throdle booth. After unloading the car, I heard we were going to Ken Block’s shop in Utah. So, I put the plate on the car and we drove over 100 miles through the hills of Utah with the car. Saturday afternoon, I was able to rip some laps in the demo area. What an amazing two weekends of racing! From track drifting to street driving, the brakes offered instant bite. Confidence in the braking allows me to drive the car to the limit every run!”
