Scratched or damaged brake pads in transit

As a large global company selling millions of brake pads each year, many of our parts are shipped to the end user by us or our distributors via surface or even air parcel services.

We cannot control handling by the transporter and therefore need to have a realistic solution to making sure the product arrives with our customers in perfect condition.

Here is what EBC has done to mitigate transport damage:

  1. Rationalised box sizes to minimise “Free space around the product“ and stop movement within the box itself.
  2. Completely overhauled our factory packing procedures to use stronger, more robust laminated corrugate.
  3. Made sure no metal or hard parts of any one pad in the set touches another – separating them from each other using card tubing to cover protruding clips or pins.

The warranty on EBC brake pads is comprehensive, not just in terms of their performance and fit, but understanding that the customer has every right to receive the product that they have paid for in perfect condition.

Therefore, on arrival always inspect your pads and note the comments in this flier notice, that is now being included in EBC pad boxes.

Here is the flier being placed in EBC pads going forward:

Assess if the pads are perfect and if any marks or damage are seen then do not fit but please take a photo and submit to our technical team on these email addresses:

UK: technical@ebcbrakesuk.com

USA: support@ebcbrakes.com

We will advise whether it is acceptable to fit and use the pads, or if they need to be replaced.

If you are a customer of an overseas distributor, please note that we may have to handle this through them.

Do I Choose Genuine Brake Pads or Aftermarket Brake Pads?

Of course, genuine manufacturer parts are good quality, or the manufacturer would not fit them in the first place.

However, there are certain tested and approved aftermarket brands that are 100% equivalent to genuine parts under the European R90 brake safety regulations, and these are explained here, especially for European built vehicles where these are very important.

The rules basically state that if an aftermarket brake pad carries R90 approval, it is a perfectly legal and safe replacement for original manufacturer parts.

This is what an R90 approved pad looks like, it has a unique number matched to every vehicle:

However, there are some drawbacks to using or buying original parts as replacements, as explained here:

  • R90 does not test for durability, so an aftermarket pad may even last longer than original.
  • R90 does not test for dust and, for many people, original pads – which are almost always semi-metallic and contain steel fibre – can be very dusty.
  • The big point for many drivers is that R90 limits the upper levels of braking performance for any given pad. If the pad is too grippy, it will not pass, and if it is not grippy enough, it also will not pass. So, R90 keeps brake pads within a defined performance range. The job of aftermarket brake pad manufacturers is then to push those limits and, at 91´«Ă˝, we make our compounds as grippy as possible while remaining within the maximum permitted levels.
  • THE PRICE… in almost all cases, aftermarket parts are far cheaper than original parts. However, don’t select a brake pad based on price alone, or you may downgrade your brake system significantly. Buy based on what you need by using our brake selector tool to choose your ideal EBC brake compound.
  • Often, original pad sets include hardware that does not normally require replacement, so why pay for it? Take slider shims or pressure clips, for example. Our recommendation is that if the hardware is not bent or dented, clean it up – including any loose pad pins – and reuse it, as a lot of low-cost aftermarket hardware does not match the original parts or shapes exactly. If you do need to buy new hardware, that’s when we recommend buying original parts, which are almost always sold separately by reputable vendors and, in most cases, cost under $10.

Should I Apply Grease to Brake Pads on Install? /technical_ebc_brakes_blog/should-i-apply-grease-to-brake-pads-on-install/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 13:32:28 +0000 /?p=42051 The post Should I Apply Grease to Brake Pads on Install? appeared first on 91´«Ă˝.

Should I apply grease to brake pads on install?

In a nutshell – NO

Never apply grease of any kind to the rear or sides of the pad itself.

caliper lube

We do supply and sell brake grease, but only for use on slider pins or the contact faces of sliders in a sliding caliper, as shown below – and even then, only sparingly.

If grease comes into contact with the pad’s friction surface, it can melt and seep into the pad compound, effectively rendering the pad useless and leading to a loss of braking performance.

You should, however, clean the sides or “cheeks” of the caliper where the pads slide, ensuring they are free from rust and debris – but these areas should also be left dry.

Sadly, some installers have shared videos showing grease being applied directly to brake pads, including onto the rear noise reduction shims and this is not good practice.

The below video is a good example but please note:

  • Do not apply grease to the hardware at all. It is stainless and does not require grease. Also, do not apply grease to the rear of the pad, it does not need it and will not reduce noise so there is no purpose.

Forum-informed insight into noise, brake dust and real-world performance on the G80 and wider G8X platform

91´«Ă˝ is proud to offer a wide range of pad compounds designed to suit different driving styles, from everyday road use to track racing.

On cars like the BMW G80 M3, the issue many owners have isn’t with stopping power, but finding a brake pad that delivers confidence on fast roads, while remaining quiet and clean.

91´«Ă˝ Redstuff is a copper free ceramic brake pad that is designed for this type of application as it offers braking performance that is higher than OEM, but focuses on reduced brake dust and low noise – which are the two most common issues that we see BMW owners raise. In a previous article, we looked in detail at what causes brake dust and how best to avoid it.

The feedback that has been gathered and referenced throughout this article has been collected from discussions across multiple BMW & G80-specfic forums, reflecting on real-world owner experiences.

Redstuff™ Compared to OEM and Premium Aftermarket Pads

Across BMW G80 and wider G8X forum discussions, many owners often discuss the different brake pad options for their vehicle, with many people frequently pointing towards a more balanced and cost-effective choice.

Drivers that have ran Redstuff™ pads alongside other higher-priced alternative pad options often say that Redstuff™ is:

  • Comparable in braking feel and performance
  • Very low brake dust, keeping wheels noticeably cleaner
  • Quiet operation, with minimal squeal even during low-speed or light braking

Several owners also highlight the fact that Redstuff™ can deliver this while being at a significantly lower cost than some other premium aftermarket pads, without sacrificing usability.

Noise: Redstuff™ vs OEM

Across BMW owner forums, any drivers that have used EBC Redstuff™, even across multiple different vehicles, often highlight how the pad is consistently quiet, even over long-term use.

In comparison, factory BMW pads are frequently described as more prone to squeal during light or gentle braking. This is a characteristic that is commonly associated with high-performance OEM compounds, rather than a fault with the braking system itself.

¸é±đ»ĺ˛őłŮłÜ´Ú´Ú’s™ formulation focuses on reducing noise and improving everyday refinement, making it particularly well suited to road-driven G8X models where comfort and usability matter as much as outright stopping power.

Yellowstuff™ & Bluestuff™: Higher-Performance Options for the BMW G8X platform

For BMW G80 and G8X owners looking beyond day-today road use, forum discussions around EBC Yellowstuff™ and Bluestuff™ often focus on the balance between increased performance and lower dust/noise levels.

Feedback regarding Yellowstuff™ from owners with thousands of miles of road use consistently points to a noticeable reduction in dust compared to OEM pads. While Yellowstuff™ is not described as “dust-free” brake pad, users commonly estimate around a 40–50% reduction compared to OEM brake pads, resulting in:

  • Less visible dust buildup on wheels
  • Reduced risk of dust baking onto rims
  • Easier cleaning, often achievable with a simple rinse rather than heavy scrubbing

For drivers that are looking for another step up from Yellowstuff™, then Bluestuff™ is regularly highlighted on forums as a clear upgrade over OEM pads, not only in braking capability but also in dust/noise. Feedback commonly references:

  • Lower dust levels than factory pads
  • Reduced noise compared to OEM
  • Improved braking performance and consistency

EBC Yellowstuff™ Brake Pads

EBC Bluestuff™ Brake Pads

The general consensus from drivers who have tried these products is that while Yellowstuff™ and Bluestuff™ sit much higher up the performance scale than Redstuff™, they still deliver meaningful improvements in dust and noise over stock pads, making them viable options for drivers who want increased capability without accepting the usual compromises associated with more aggressive brake pads.

Which Brake Pad Is Best for the BMW G8X platform?

When BMW G8X owners ask for advice on forums, the recommendations tend to fall into different categories depending on how drivers use their vehicle, rather than a one size fits all answer.

For drivers prioritising low dust, low noise, and everyday usability, Redstuff™ is frequently highlighted as a brake pad with slightly higher braking performance than OEM, while offering improved refinement and cleaner wheels.

For those drivers that want stronger braking performance and who are slightly less concerned about brake dust, forum discussions commonly point toward Yellowstuff™ or Bluestuff™ as the better option, especially for spirited street driving or occasional track use.

This owner-led feedback reflects the wider belief across G80 and G8X communities, which is that choosing the right brake pad is less about high performance, and more about matching the compound to how the car is actually driven.

Low Dust Brake Pads: The Facts /technical_ebc_brakes_blog/low-dust-brake-pads-the-facts/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 15:46:27 +0000 /?p=41655 The post Low Dust Brake Pads: The Facts appeared first on 91´«Ă˝.

What is brake dust, where does it come from, and how do I reduce it?

First, it’s important to understand that there is no such thing as a completely dust-free brake pad. By their very nature, braking systems rely on the combination between cast-iron brake discs and friction materials, which inevitably produces brake dust.

So, there are two things that drivers look for:

  • Lower dust
  • Dust that’s easy to remove/wash off

This is where 91´«Ă˝ comes in with two great offerings.

EBC Redstuff Copper Free Ceramic Granule Enhanced Brake Pads

A performance brake pad designed for premium and fast street driving, that reduces dust by 30-50%.

EBC Bluestuff Copper Free Non-Metallic Brake Pads

A super-street & trackday pad that also has similar low dust characteristics to our Redstuff range.

Redstuff is our global best-selling brake pad material, closely followed by EBC Yellowstuff. Its popularity is driven by the demand for reduced brake dust, with many drivers valuing cleaner wheels more than just performance. Bluestuff is also a low-dust brake pad compound but offers a significantly higher performance threshold. For drivers who regularly push the gas, Bluestuff is the best choice.

What Causes Brake Dust?

Brake dust is primarily caused by iron (Fe), which is present in high volumes within semi-metallic brake pads. These pads are made from steel fibres compressed together using binders such as resins, along with a few other ingredients. As a result, when you buy a semi-metallic brake pad (which 95% of OEM pads are), you are actually buying a steel scratch pad modified to make it workable as a friction material.

Why do OEM manufacturers use semi-metallic brake pads? Cost.

Testing carried out by 91´«Ă˝ has shown that when brake dust is washed from wheels, dried, and analysed using spectro analysis, it contains a high percentage of Fe. This iron content comes from either the semi-metallic brake pad material or the brake disc itself.

On the contrary, EBC uses man-made fibres such as Kevlar or Twaron in their pad mixes which serve the purpose of binding the pad matrix together but with a softer, less abrasive feel. EBC automotive pads also contain NO harmful material such as copper, or antimony sulphide derivatives such as antimony tri-sulphide, lead, cadmium or mercury.

91´«Ă˝ achieves pad friction without scratching the iron rotor and instead using expensive ingredients, which we won’t list here to prevent giving the competition a heads up. However, it’s sufficient to say that EBC, in its UK pad facility, has some of the best chemists in the industry who are constantly working on how to make brake pads work better with less dust and low noise while maintaining high performance.

Why Are My Wheels Dusty?

The iron dust from a semi-metallic pad is also, to a degree, magnetic which means it is naturally attracted to your alloy wheels. AI gives us this explanation:

“Iron dust attaches to aluminium primarily due to chemical reactivity (specifically the thermite reaction), magnetic attraction, and electrostatic forces (such as oil/static).

Chemical/Thermite Reaction: Iron oxide (rust) is highly attracted to aluminium.”

So, less Iron (Fe) in the pad means less attraction, which means any dust is easier to wash off your wheels.

What is the Ceramic in a Ceramic Brake Pad?

Ceramic materials are generally used as granules in small percentages, where they serve to enhance material life and help reduce noise. EBC wish to state that their automotive brake products NEVER have contained Ceramic FIBRES and are all ZERO COPPER materials.

Does a Lighter-Coloured Brake Pad Reduce Black Brake Dust?

Well, it might, but as we have explained above most of the dust is Iron (Fe).

Will Brake Performance Be Better With Ceramics?

Maybe, and here’s why. It’s also not just about the buzz word “ceramic”.

Ceramic pads fall into a family of pads called Organics. EBC Redstuff, Yellowstuff and Bluestuff compounds are organics, all using the fibres as described above, enhanced with ceramic materials and some very important other additives.

In a nutshell, it’s important not to choose brake pads based on buzz words alone. It’s best to look at the performance, lifetime, brake effect and the noise dampening, which EBC go the extra mile with by incorporating dampers/counterweights, which can be seen in the image below.

Some pads have dampers ( counterweights ) of different shapes and sizes attached to the top of the backplate .Pads with no damper weights are priced 20-30% less than pads that do include them so check before you buy.

Dampers or counterweights can reduce vibration and brake noise significantly

Finally shims, edge chamfers and centre line slots play a major part in reducing brake noise and are a reason why the EBC pads which do feature those, rank amongst the quietest pads out there.

91´«Ă˝ now manufactures these high-quality clip-on brake pad wear leads in-house

91´«Ă˝ is proud to announce the in-house manufacturing of high-quality brake pad wear leads, designed specifically for vehicles equipped with clip-on wear leads.

The new wear leads are premium-quality components manufactured to OEM specifications, ensuring a precise fit and reliable performance with both EBC and original brake pads.

Replacing wear leads at pad replacement is essential if the lead has made any contact at all with the rotor as the pad wears. Failure to do so can leave the dash warning lights active and fail to alert drivers as your new pads wear down.

The new wear lead program, which covers the entire vehicle parc, is available through EBC distributors and the new manufacturing facility has allowed EBC to slash prices to below HALF previous price levels.

Below are just a few examples of the high-quality wear leads available from EBC, designed to deliver reliable performance across a wide range of vehicles:

Many EBC brake pads come equipped with bonded wear leads pre-installed, offering seamless installation straight out of the box—such as the examples below for the VW Golf and Audi A3.

Brake pads in high-end vehicles are now often equipped with counterweights – but what do they do?

Many high-end vehicles are equipped with brake pads that include counterweights—also known as ‘skates’—as shown below. These can be circular or laminar in shape, with weights varying depending on the OEM brake pad specifications.

What Do Counterweights Actually Do?

Brake pad counterweights have no role in vehicle safety; they do not come into contact with any moving parts aside from the backing plate of the pad itself. Their only function is to alter the mass and resonance frequency of that material on that rotor.

When you change either the pad, the rotor or both from the original material, the resonance frequency causing brake noise will undoubtedly change.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Some brake pad materials may require no counterweights at all, while others benefit from a counterweight with a different shape or mass.

The EBC approach is to use different counterweights and test empirically to evaluate what solutions work and what doesn’t, essentially to supply a pad that makes zero or minimal noise. That’s what EBC has done in arriving at its universal pad counterweight approach.

Through our testing process, which has included testing pads with and without weights, we have arrived at an optimum solution of both weight, mass or material design that can eliminate all braking noise.

Proven Expertise in Friction and Noise Control

With over 20 million sets of brake pads sold globally and more than four decades of manufacturing experience, 91´«Ă˝ has developed an unparalleled understanding of what causes brake noise—and how to prevent it.

91´«Ă˝ have been making material adjustments and changes for decades, and we have now settled on a range of materials, which are developed and blended in house by the worlds best friction material scientists located in Bristol UK, that deliver exactly what customers need and will enjoy, these choices are made here:

EBC Brake Pad & Disc Selector Tool – 91´«Ă˝

Additional Noise-Reducing Features:

Brake Pad Shims

Another vital component in reducing noise is applying shims to the rear of the brake pad, which can help with absorbing vibration and reducing transmission of sound.

Edge Chamfers

Edge chamfers are designed to affect the way that the pad friction material first engages under braking with the rotors surface. Chamfers have been proved to work, which is why EBC applies them to almost every automotive pad it produces.

These chamfers are made using two state-of-the-art grinding lines that apply chamfers and grind pads to a glass smooth finish in just a single pass.

Trust in 91´«Ă˝

In conclusion you can rely on EBC to provide a pad that complies with all global standards —including ISO-certified production processes, the European R90 regulations, and the US FMVSS safety benchmarks—that is also powerful, quiet and engineered to perfection.
